Old rig question

Well, not a really old rig, a Phenom I rig.

Anyhow, my dads got a 9850 that sits and churns for our family team in WCG, he has been part of it for several years lol, but ive thought maybe it may be worth thorwing only two cores to that and then maybe 2 for the [H]orde......from the power/ppd aspect should it be worth it? The PC is going to be running at 100% anyhow, so the power draw is not a huge concern(funny enough we are in FL and dont use AC anywhere but the top floor).......its got a 8500GT in it right now, do those get alot/any points?.....the rig, sorry boxen, runs Ubuntu Studio 10.1(thats the most recent revision of ubuntu isnt it? i cant remember the number)...

other than that, ill add my old PC into the mix I think(Athlon X2 5000+, 7300 GT...maybe 2 if it would be worth it), what PPD could i look at there?........

Do not mix the CPU clients for WCG and F@H on any system. They do not play well together at all. Also, to run F@H on that system you would need to run the uniprocessor client and two instances of it. An older Phenom I probably wouldn't make many, if any, points on the SMP work units with only two cores.

The 8500GT isn't worth folding on in my opinion. I had nothing but trouble trying to fold on an 8600GT and it didn't put out much in the way of points either. On a really good day it might do 1800PPD and that was overclocked. On average it probably did 1300-1500 PPD. The 8500GT isn't going to do even that well. You would also have to use the Windows GPU client running through Wine to get it to run on that system which would probably drop the PPD even more.

As for the Athlon X2, I wouldn't expect much out of it. It's been a couple years or so since I last ran anything on my X2 4000+@3.0 since I no longer have the machine in my control but it would do 1800-2000 PPD on SMP work units back then and those were A2 units. It wouldn't do very good and depending on what it's clocked at, might not make deadlines on the A3 units. The 7300GT wouldn't be able to fold either. The 8 series cards are the first cards which can fold. For most, it's not worth folding on anything slower than an 8800GT or similar card.

pretty much on par with what smokerng said.. unless your going to run all 4 cores on F@H its not worth it.. the athlon II x2 250 stock clock would probably do double the ppd the 9850 would do on 2 cores.. id just leave it running WCG its not worth the headache in my opinion.. the athlon x2 5000+ if its a black edition and can be overclocked to 3Ghz should do ok but it might be right on the edge for the deadline on a3 WU's.. back during the A2 WU's i was doing 2000 PPD on my athlon 64 x2 6400+ @ 3.2ghz.. just to compare to my phenom II 940.. at 3ghz i was doing 2900-3000 PPD per client (2 cores for each client).. this was back way before vmware supported 4 cores..

i may just end up alternating days between WCG and F@H, that would work right? If I manually took one offline, and put the other online, the machine is run 24/7, current uptime is like 4 weeks(excluding power inturruptions


this whole thing is more of a "mini farm" till I get my own machines up and going(the X2 I recently gave to my sister, and is idle 23 hours or so a day, if anything she does FB checking on it lol.


i forgot to add, ive got another machine coming online soon for Folding.....a Q9450(want to OC, dont know head room yet), with a 9800GTX with relativly high clocks.....will have either Linux, or Vista Buissness x86, or if i'm board Mac OSX(prob not, and def not for folding lol).....waiting on getting back to the US to get a good deal on a mobo, and a killer PSU deal got everything else........what points can I expect at stock clocks? And OC for the 9800GTX of 740/whatever was auto set on shader by the Afterburner/stock mem...?

edit:monkey, its an Athlon X2 5000, not a Athlon II X2 250, dont think it will get close to the phenom with the phenom on two cores...both are stock clocked atm(have had the Phenom 9850 to ~3.0 and the X2 there. ...... heres for hoping my dad gets on the upgrade train and gets a 1055T, then i have a Phenom II X2 550 that should unlock(my Crosshair III cant unlock well when I had it in there, though the M3A79-T should be able to.....will be a hell of a file server, with 8 GB of RAM lol)

the Q9450 will out perform the phenom II clock for clock because PG uses the intel API for the smp client.. so anywhere from 6200-9000 ppd depending on what you overclock it too..


yeah i know its not.. i was just using it as an example.. the x2's not really worth folding on either but at least it would be less of a headache then having to deal with 2 totally different clients on the same system..

gotcha now, those numbers wont be too bad when I get the 9450 up and running.....


i think when I get back to the states ill be giving a go of giving it a week on one, a week on the other for the 9850. best of both worlds then.....up until I started F@H i had been using my X6 for WCG(i'm not a big fan of the BOINC client, dont know why, just dont like the interface very much)

i actually prefer the boinc client over anything F@H's used.. way better project control, better system resources controls.. wouldnt mind if PG took a page out of the boinc book and created a gui interface similar to boinc..

meh, just personal preference.....for F@H i just use the smp client, simple, to the point......it is more of the aesthetics used in the client itself, i used to like it, the new skin is horrendous, and it doesnt always use all 6 cores for me, but thats for another thread, at another time lol.
