i know whs will run on a 700mhz cpu with 512ram but would you say it would be to slow for backing up 2 pc's and supplying film in avi format to the 2 pc's possibly a 3rd if i build a fixed media center
 
If you can get gigabit in it and at least 1gb of RAM it might be worth it. The RAM will help the most, the gigabit will help more than one pc connect at a time.
 
Wow. Does that even meet the minimum system requirements for whs.

Ok I just checked. minimum is a 1ghz p3 with 512mb ram. So no the op's rig doesn't meet the minimums.

Yeah too slow for the following reasons;
- A system that lowly clocked is probably so old that it still uses PATA as the primary storage interface. PATA hard drives are relatively slow these days.

- Such an old system would probably only have PCI slots for expansion and a 10/100 NIC. If you wanted to add more storage using SATA drives and a gigabit NIC, then you would have to use the PCI slots, And that's gonna severely impact storage/streaming/backup performance as the PCI slots share the same bandwidth.
 
ok back to the drawing board was looking at 1gb cpu an 512 but if that to slow going for new but wont 35watt cpu or lower if possible
 
but yeas i would of used sata pci cards for more drives was trying to keep it cheap and parts i allready have about
 
I setup an old pc for my brother, i beleive its a duron 700 with 758 ram, yeah its slow but it works, he doesnt do any streaming on it, but it does back up his computers and it seems to have no major issues doing that...
 
i had a 500mhz befor and i admit that was slow.
cont remeber how well it streamed as it was only the trail so dident wont to put to much on it.
i guess ill have to get the parts and try.
the p3 1gb cpus on ebay they use 25-35watt the mobo ill get has 5 pci slots built in 10/100network router is only 100 so no point of better card that gives me 5 slots for 4 port sata cards
i have a feeling for what i wont it will do the video isent hd just standerd cd size rips to keep space down
 
that 100bucks would be much better on my bills lol and for the atom system i dident see much room for expansion on them

I thought the goal was for a WHS.. oh which Atom's do fine at.. Most of the WHS servers made by oem's have been single core atoms infact. You can also snag a sempron & mobo for 100 bucks.

But alas if you dont have the 100 bucks to spend on computer parts you could use what you have for FreeNas just fine.
 
Should work just fine. And its way light on the hardware requirements.

damn thoght that was a winner then you have to have all hdd to start with you cont just add them when you get them or need them
