I got some old NEC computers, army surplus crap and when I boot up everything seems relatively normal but after it posts It shows me the system specs and then checks boot records but then has a bunch of weird symbols and a prompt. How do I get that to say bye bye and make these things boot?

sounds like the hard drive data is borked. try booting it off a floppy disk. if it boots fine then format (if it can, the HDD may be bad) and re-install your OS.
