I'll try to make this quick.

I built myself a new system. Gave my old system to my brothers, took their old computer and scrouged up some parts, putting system together for my daughter(4yo), and I can't install the OS.

P4 cpu(2.4 , 2.26), Asus P4S533, GeForce 4 Ti4600/GeForce 5200. 2x512 DDR / 3x1GB DDR.

So everything is parts I had lying around, except for the 3GB RAM. Put everything together and I got as far as expanding installation files in Vista. Once. Now I can't even get to the first dialog screen. Sometimes is won't boot at all, sometimes it blue screens. Sometimes it says the file checksum doesn't match with the calculated result.

I've swapped the CPU, Video Card, RAM, Hard Drive, CD Drive and I'm still having problems. Is my Motherboard bad?

Can you recommend a good motherboard to use my old parts? My last computer had an ASUS P4P800, seemed like a good board.

Should I just return the RAM and start over? But then I'll have to buy Motherboard, RAM, Video Card, CPU.

Run memtest86+ v2.01 and some HDD diagnostic tests. Also, try new cables for the HDD. Do you have another PSU you could try?

FYI, I have a working P4 combo in my FS thread for only $30, but no AGP. See sig for link. ;) But first, lets try to get your current parts working before you consider buying more parts.

Hey, my last post didn't post. Well, I tried changing the IDE cable, and no change, then on a whim I pulled out some RAM and it worked. I played with the sticks of RAM and it just didn't want to work with 3 GB. I am now running 2x1GB plus 1x512MB, and it works fine that way.

I posted pics over here.

Thanks for your help.

You may need to bump your RAM & MCH voltage to run 4 sticks. Did you run memtest?

that woulda been the first thing i tried..

Only has 3 DIMM slots. I may experiment with the voltages later.

Yes I ran Memtest with 3GB in there, and it reports no problems. The mobo recognized it and posted. So it's not just that the mobo doesn't like 3GB, it's that the mobo+windows combo doesn't like it.

I got windows installed with 1GB. Went up to 3, problem, dropped back to 2, good. Swapped DIMM 3 for 2, still good. Added the other DIMM in 3, problems again. Used an old 512 DIMM in 3, still good. So it didn't matter which of the 1GB DIMMs was in slot 3, just that the total was 3GB.

I'm just glad to have it up and running now.
