I just found an old pc in the closet at my dad's house.

HP Pavilion 6545C
-Intel Celeron Processor 500MHz
-64 MB SDRAM shared memory architecture with upto 11MB allocated to video memory
-13.0 GB hard drive (it's a Maxtor)
-Integrated Intel Direct AGP 3D graphics with up to 11MB dynamic memory
-HP CD-Writer Plus 8000 Series CDRW drive (not sure how fast)
-Windows 98
Basically, it's a piece of shit....what could I do with it? Any ideas would be great because it's just sitting here open next to me. I don't have the windows disc to reformat everything and get it running (I think it had/has a virus) so what would you guys do with this "junk"?

EDIT: typo

run it as a server perhaps?

or u could use it to back up ur current pc...use norton ghost and ghost ur harddrive and store it on that pc

play starcraft?

That is actually still a nice system for general use (web surfing, word processing, the only things many people do).

You could always make it into a file server. Or a slow Folding@Home machine.

I'll send you a PM with my address.

I'll even pay for shipping to help you get rid of it.

Folding@Home? Ok now I'm TOTALLY confused. What the heck is this protein junk:confused:

1) Make a server
2) Get a new vid card w/TV Out and hook it up to your TV
3) F@lding
4) Sell it to mobiux :)

Turn it into a game server. It might not be that fast, but it would be better than something else.

I have 3 systems, you can always find a use for another computer. :) I spread my work out between the two main machines I have.

You could donate it to good will, or many other charities.

Next local festival im going to sponsor just such a thing, raffle off tickets then give the proceeds to charity.

Aint nothing wrong with it, and it beats the heck out of just having it sit there rusting away.

If I add memory could it be a capable CS server? (I know absolutely nothing about servers)

Yes, it could be a capable CS server. At most a 12 man public. But it was make the perfect private server. As long as you have a decent connection you could do it for sure.

I used to have my server on an AMD K6-2 450Mhz. I don't have the server up anymore, but I'm in the process of building a Dual P-2 system for a webserver and a CS server.

With a system that slow, I would suggest 1gb of RAM, but 512 should do it.

Folding@home is a distributed computing app. We are helping them learn more about proteins and how they fold so we can work on diseases that result from improperly created proteins. Many diseases are caused by the deformed proteins and this is one way to help a good cause.

If you look at my sig, I turned my old HP into a server.
I just threw in another stick of RAM, got a better CDROM, and installed server software on it. I ran Linux for a few years before switching it over to Win Server 03.
I fold on it, run backups to it, use it for file storage, web/ftp/game serving ( not too much load yet - hence only 256 RAM), and run misc. programs on it. ;)
