I have 2 old pc's
one i think 166mhz
and the other is 400mhz
both running WIN98 SE

i wanna use them just for AIM so i can use it while im playing games on my other pc

well i formated and got one of them working and the network card stopped working.

ones a netgear FA310TX fast ethernet PCI CARD

other one is

3com fast etherlink XL 10/100mb TX ethernet NIC 3c905-TX

win98 SE picks up the 3com, and i have the software for the netgear, the 3com lights up saying im running at 100mbs, but no internet.

the netgear doesnt if get anything,no lights. nothing

anyone know anything

sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

if you are just running AIM, why not try a small version of linux. try DSL (damn small linux) or knoppix. Both can run from CD, and will run faster on your computer then win98.

www.linuxiso.org has downloads for alot of the distro's out there.

If its not on there, just type it into google, and it should be one of the first results.

Which one do i pick theres alot?

i asked my teacher, he said it was a bios issue? if i had it working once.. then it wouldnt matter right?

i dunno

try another pci slot and see if that is the issue - older motherboards have shared pci on the bottom of the boards - so move them close to the cpu and see if that fixes the problem.
Make sure that the network cards software is uninstalled as it may conflict with the other's software. Putting two network cards in a 98se box (even one after the other) can really mess with the os.
Good luck.

with win98, you have to run their network setup wizard thing that normally comes up the first time you try to run internet explorer. I've found that getting the network to recognize under 98 without doing that can be a pain in the butt.
