A friend of mine just bought a new mobo from newegg that has an AGP slot in it for gaming. We replaced everything, had to do a bunch of cutting of the case to make it fit, and now the old PSU that was in it doesn't seem to be working after it worked before. It powers up the CPU fan but not the hard drive or anything else. Granted, it is only a 160W PSU that was in an old Gateway machine, but it should have enough power to power up the things that he has in the case. The PSU is Newton Power Limited and is the original PSU from the Gateway case. Will Gateway PSU's just not power things up that are non-Gateway? Anyone else ever tried this?

Let me guess... He liked the slim-line case so that's why he didn't go with a standard case/PSU when he upgraded the motherboard?

sigh.. I guess not.

It's a standard ATX, so it should work. If the drives aren't spinning up, but the fans are, try unplugging the IDE cables from the drives and try again. If the spin up unplugged from the board, then the problem is at the board.

Got it figured out. Turns out, the CPU wasn't secure underneath the heatsink that it was pretty much molded to with some cement-like thermal grease :)
