I've just set up an old Dell Pentium I 233MHz MMX 128MB ram to act as a firewall/router.
The psu in it is rated at 145W, and has a 60mm fan. It is powering the processor, onboard savage graphics, 2 PCI nics, a cdrom and a floppy (no hdd). Once booted the cdrom is not in use at all, so the power drain is fairly small I hope.
The system has no fans apart from the psu fan (large passive heatsink on p233 with AS3). I pulled the psu apart and removed the top cover. In operation it never felt warm to touch unlike any psus in a modern pc. Also the PC is always under minimal load - only running bsd and routing data between the two cards.
I pulled the plug on the fan about an hour ago, and the heatsink is still very cool (as is the processor sink). Do you reckon I will be alright running the box 24/7 without the psu fan (so it is perfectly silent)?
I'm a bit nervous cos the only time I fiddled with a psu before was when I put a quiet fan in a 400W psu that ran pretty hot - it failed two months later (not in operation, just dead after not being used for two weeks when I was on holiday).
