Old CPU Overheating?

i flashed the BIOS of my old Slo 1motherboard so that I could place an 800mhz CPU in it. The CPU has a passive heatsink on it, and I don't have a fan inthe back of the case yet. Whenever that CPU is in there, the system recognizes it correctly, but the system locks up.

When I place the older P2 400mhz CPU inthere, no lockups. My question is whether the CPU could be overheating, or maybe it isn't fully supported by the motherboard, even though it's recognized. The temps inthe bios are low.
 
which board are you running? there were many early slot 1 boards that couldnt go beyond the katmai core. if this is the case for your board, you could toss a 600mhz p3 in it.
 
it's a legend qdi brilliant 1x board, and the latest bios is supposed to accept coppermine cpus.
 
few things... I would not feel warm and fuzzy about a passive hs on that chip. the retail box models hs was fairly beefy. when you say it locks up, where does it happen? during post or in windows? if it is the latter, heat could easily be the problem.

I see some people say they are successfully running 1GHz or better cpu's in that board so it should be possible. is that 800 an e or eb?
 
A lot of those Slot1 CPUs with Passive heatsinks are probably OEM pulls, and the case had a ventilation system designed to work with the passive sink, on that board layout. You can try rigging up a fan to it, or a fan pointing at it, and you may solve your problems.

If that doesn't work - Has this CPU been tested in another known-working Slot1 board? It may have been dropped, overvolted for too long, anythng, for all you know by now - If you don't know.

Further, if it's an OEM pull (Passive sink = Yeah, obviously), it got pulled for a reason, so you might have a dud on your hands.

BIOS temps are probably not accurate, and the system is under no sort of load at the time, I'd say those are pretty worthless readings.

I think you need another Slot1 to test this CPU with, and I think it needs a form of active cooling after you know it works.

thanks for the feedback. i believe its an eb, and its a dell pull. the system usually locks up during os installation.
 
I ran a Celeron 1.3@1.6 on a Soyo 6BA+IV (440BX) with a modified slotket.
