I have an old compaq 400mhz.
I am planning on making this a folding only machine, but the thing is, it won't install an OS?

Everytime its booted it says Non System disk Error.

I have no floppy in at the time and when I try to boot with a dos diskette it says the same thing.

I can't get it to boot from CD to even attemp to install an OS, any ideas?

It might not be able to boot from a CD. Some old PC's - just like the one you're working on can't.

If it can't boot from floppies either, something is wrong though. Check the ribbon cable and look in the bios to make sure the Floppy and or CD (if its an option) have the boot order set correctly.

How is your boot sequence set up? Also, What kind of installation disk are you using? One thing you could try is to set up a boot disk, when you get to a prompt view the directory on the CD.If there is a setup.exe or install.exe try running it.

Peace, Morlos

Edit: :p Sorry Partytogo, Also when you set up the boot disk make sure you set it up with CDROM support.

It has boot from CD before as well as floppies.

I am just stumped.

I am trying to get Gentoo on it, but even a WinXP and Win 98 se disk couldn't boot.
