I am building a new system and have an older Antec 660AMG case lying around I was thinking of using. System will be:

E6750 or q6600 (or even Q9450 or E8400 if they ever release)
Gigabyte P35-DS3R
4 GB DDR2 800
8800GT 512 or 8800GTS 512 (new GTS)
2 x DVD burner
2 x SATA HDD
1 x IDE HDD
PS Undecided

The 660 will physically hold everyhting I am just not sure I understand how much cooling these new systems reallly need. The 660 has 3x80mm fans, one front, one back and one low on the side (I guess for teh GPU?). It does not have a second side vent like I see many cases have these days.

It will be alright. Obviously it won't be the best cooling solution, but it is far from putting your components in danger. Think of the horrid cases that OEM companies put their PC's in.

But for the prices that some cases are going for now I would purchase a new one. There have been a lot of good deals on the Coolermaster 690 which uses 120mm and 140mm fans so it will be much quieter than a case with 80mm fans, not to mention cooler.
 
I never thought about the 80mm fans being louder, I guess they have to spin a lot more. I reallly wanted a case with top mounted IO / controls anyways. I guess I will start hunting.

Well they have to spin a lot faster to move the same amount of air as a 120mm fan. You can get 120mm fans that are pretty much silent while still moving ~45CFM of air, while a silent 80mm fan moves ~25CFM.
 
In general, people overestimate the amount of cooling a case needs to provide. By a huge amount. Your old case will be fine, even if you're overclocking. I think the only real reason you might consider spending the money on a case with larger fans is that 120mm fans can push more air quietly than 80mm fans can. Well, plus your desire for top front panel stuff.
 
The fact that the larger fans are quiter is enough of a reason to pick up a new case. Appears a there are a lot of nice Rosewill's and Cooler Masters with top mounted IO / controls to choose from.

This man speaks the truth. My system(while it is aging), has only the CPU, GPU and PSU fans on. There are no case fans going at any time, hell I dont even have any installed. Makes for a rather quiet system to :)
 
Antec 900 has top mounted controls, look around its price has been dropping.
