Old 775 rig boot-loop no beeps

I've got an old PC that I can't get to boot. It powers on but goes into a "boot-loop" where the fans come on, run for a while, then shut off, come back on for a while, ad infinitum. No boot screen. No beeps. Most of the threads I found via web search make it sound like DOA this or that, but this rig was running fine a few weeks ago, when the boot drive failed (one of those Windows things like "can't find boot sector" or whatever...again) and I just yanked all the HDDs out of it instead of getting it running again.

My gut tells me it's not the CPU, RAM, or mobo. So I'm guessing no beeps means PSU (sticker says "Silencer" 500 EPS12V) or mobo, but I dunno. If it's the mobo, I don't think I'm going to buy a whole new PC for the task at hand (remote controlled torrent box). Really I think it's something jiggly but I checked all the connections and it's not booting so obviously something's wrong.

Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L motherboard.
Radeon HD 4870 card.

I'm thinking about just ordering a Corsair CX600 from Amazon, and putting off going all medieval (breadboarding, etc) until I get the new PSU installed, but figured I'd ask for advice first.

I'd try resetting the CMOS, that might jog it back to life.

fwiw.. I have the same model that does the same thing. I believe it was an issue on some EP45 boards. It would basically turn on, spin fans, turn off, etc. Sounds strange but I would have to turn off pc, unplug power cable, plug back in and turn on to get it booted up.

Quix: I should've mentioned I tried that already. Touched a flathead to both pins. Also took the battery out and left it out for about a half hour.

Magnetik: Yep, I've had the same thing happen more than a few times with this rig.

My current ASRock rig does something somewhat similar, sometimes; if I power it down by holding down the power button, sometimes it won't reboot, until it will.

Anyone want to recommend a CHEAP mobo to replace the GB, if I have to go that route? Something reliable that I can plug my DDR2 stick, CPU, and video card into?

You're going to have to find a used board since they no longer make LGA 775 boards and the ones you'll find in stock wont be discounted.

I would suggest hitting up our for sale section of the site. Pretty sure you'll find someone selling an old LGA 775 board, if not then start a WTB thread asking for one.

Notice the layout on that motherboard? Does your case support MicroBTX form factor?\

edit
It was a form factor developed by Intel about a decade ago to replace ATX. It was supposed to move the components in an orientation to help with heating and cooling issues from power hungry devices. It never took off though and Intel eventually dropped it. Some BTX boards are backwards compatible with ATX, but that board is not one of them. It's clearly a mirrored version of ATX.

I had this same issue with a 775 nforce board. Just wouldn't boot up one day. Replaced it with a board from this forum, exact model, and it booted fine.

So my opinion its the motherboard.
