but let's say I were to install Vista on a new Raptor I would buy. Could I leave my harddrive with XP (and all my mp3's) hooked and still be able to retrieve my mp3's from said harddrive while in Vista? That way I could transfer the mp3's to the new hard drive, wipe the old one and put the mp3's back.

Yes, you can transfer everything back, should be no problem. You can even install vista on the same drive and windows will create a directory for all your old OS files called windows.old... where you can access all the old files and transfer them over.
