I am in the market for a 22-24 inch LCD Panel. The unit will be used in my bedroom primarily for use with Vista Media Center and MythTV. It may see some gaming action from my 360.

DILEMA: - I'm going to attach it to my laptop (Dual core 2.2 ghz with 512 MB ATI RADEON 2600HD) I am going to use HDMI. The highest resolution my video card will push with an external monitor is 1600x1200. So here's my question --

From the Samsung, BenQ, HP, or the LG monitor which one should I get? I've read thousands of opinions and some of the reviews on Anandtech and I'm still confused. I cant do native 1900x1200 so I will probably have to live with black bars, but if I don't have to, I'd like not to... Please provide your wisdom and insights. thanks in advance,

Luis

Are you sure you can't do 1080p? Because you may be seeing the 1600 x 1200, because that's the kind of monitor you attached to your laptop before. There is an option in your display preferences that allows you to show other supported resolutions, which may not be supported with your monitor.

With regards to the monitor, if you can get your laptop to scale the image, rather than have the monitor scale it, you'll still be using the native res of your monitor, but your graphics card is doing the scaling. Generally that type of result is better than using monitor scaling.

I'm using a BENQ FP 241W and it's a good monitor, refresh rates not as fast as some of the new ones, but the panel quality is good. It's got all of the inputs that you could ask for, including native HDMI. Yes, if you enable 1:1 in the monitor menu you will have black bars if you don't want a stretched image.

I'm running an Nvidia Geforce Go7400/Intel GMA 945 and I have a 24" monitor running at 1920 x 1200 perfectly well. I'm sure your laptop will be able to support a 24" monitor!

Plus, if you play any XBOX360, it'll look MUCH better on a monitor that it can go 1080P on! (even tho I hear most 360 titles are only 720P, so maybe not then), just in case you get a PS3 also (1080p games, woot!)

Now I saw a post in Best Buy for the 28 inch Handspree for 529 dollars. Every reviewer on their site raves about it... any thoughts on that?

Thanks to all that have replied so far..

I'd be weary of the reviews on the Best Buy site. Hannspree, although growing, is probably not the pinnacle in LCD monitors yet.

Take response times, contrast ratios and such with a grain of salt, all of the recent panels have decent response times, so don't compare that way. The best thing to do is literally go to Best Buy and see the monitor for yourself.

hey, if i were you i would buy the benq 24" vw. The reason im saying this is because mine just came in the fedex truck and its AMAZING!!!! well, i havent plugged it in yet :p, im waiting until my birthday to plug in, but its sitting on my desk, it looks beautiful, and from the user reviews, is one of the best gaming monitors on the market without having to ask oprah for some money :p.
consider it :D, im posting a review i believe this weekend or at the latest next week.
