OK... Just got WOW. Need some advice

Despite my doubts about Blizzard, I'm going to give it a try. I need some help deciding on a character...

I've narrowed down my character choices to:

1. Warrior
2. Paladin
3. Hunter

OK. I had wanted to be an archer but Blizzard decided to put guns in WOW which is dumb in my opinion. Who uses swords or bows in a world with guns? Anyway, they have nerfed the hunter to hell in the next patch so the Hunter is probably out.

That leaves the Warrior and Paladin. I played a Paladin in D2. Never played a Warrior
cause they just seemed like unsophisticated brutes. So I guess I'm leaning towards a Paladin BUT I noticed there's nothing like zeal in WOW. In D2 I played a Zealot with
a lot of frost equipment.

What's the closest thing to a frost Zealot in WOW? Does WOW have swords that
freeze the enemy when you hit them? I'm not real big on shield bashing. Can I survive in WOW as a Paladin without sheild bashing?

One more question... Create my character on PVE or PVP server? Which one are most people playing? Which is the most fun?

Warrior or Hunter. You can't play as horde and be a paladin.

And I know you're playing horde, because I know you are going to join the [H]ard Guild on Stormscale server.

Bows work just as well as guns.

edit: Everyone I know who started chars on PVE regreted it and switched to PVP

Play a warrior. Pally is just autoattack :(. It's not fun, you'll just be really hard to kill.

Hard to kill while not doing all that much damage. Plus you wouldn't be able to play with the guild!

Hunters are getting owned. Take it from a 60 hunter...don't touch the hunter class until we are fixed.

I'm a lvl 26 warrior and I'm really enjoying it. It's a tough character to play because it's harder to solo but you can do it. And once we get to lvl 50+ we own everyone. Downsides is we are gear dependant and skills cost an ass load, but if you run through instances with friends you can make plenty of cash quick utilizing the auction house. We are not fearless brutes who simply swing their axes and can take a lot of damage. They are much more complex and really fun to play. That's my $.02

Don't listen to these guys. Hunters kick ass. Everyone's just freaking out cos of stuff happening on the test server. Guess what? It's called a TEST SERVER for a reason. None of the shit they're doing on there is finalized yet. They are still balancing all the issues. So there's absolutely no reason to freak out. Honestly, pick whatever the hell you want. If your main intention is to play PvP or do raid instances, you absolutely cannot go wrong with picking a Priest, however. Shadow specced Priests are the best PvPers in the game, and Priests are *always* in demand for endgame instances (although you won't be getting many invites to Molten Core if you're purely shadow specced). Warriors are also always in demand, and they are seriously kicking ass since the last patch. In the hands of a skilled player, a warrior is also extremely deadly in PvP.

For what it's worth, I have a level 60 hunter. In the past week, I've done Stratholme twice, Scholomance, Dire Maul twice, and joined three raids to take down Blightcaller and one to take down Araj. So much for Hunters having trouble finding invites for raids and groups.

I agree with WangButter.

play what you want.

it sounds like you're coming into this game looking to be the best of the best of the BEST. Whatever happened to playing a game to have fun?

I have a level 35 warrior with absolutely SHIT gear. I play solo mainly, but also with some good friends (irl) and have a blast. I don't care if my gear isn't all that great, I'm in a PVP server but hardly ever PVP. and when i do i get beat by people 2 or 3 levels below me.

It's sad, yes. but i don't care - i'm having fun :)

48 hunter here.

hunters are fun. just can't beat shaman (like any class can  )

too bad i rolled on blackhand...didn't know there was a [h] guild :(

but yeah, i have:

48 Hunter
42 Rogue

Both classes are fun.

Again, I agree with the others, play what you like the look and feel of. Personally I've had great fun with my Rogue, but I'm loving my Mage now and have ended up playing it more than any other Character. I'll have to bitch slap you if you roll an NE Rogue/Hunter or a Dwarf Paladin though. ;)

Blizzard has said that the patch was finalized before it was put on the test servers.

The test servers are simply checking for bugs. The patch content is final.

Your Hunter is doomed.

Just play a hunter. Whats the big deal? 3 months ago everyone was pissed that the Pally "Nerfed to hell". Now you dont hear much about it. My pally holds his own. Everyone gets so upset when their class gets a negative adjustment. How is his hunter DOOMED. What does that mean? he cant play? no more fun?

Just to get philisophical: If you are afraid of the Nerf, do not play the BEST. If a class is clearly ahead of the pack they it should be fixed and probably will.

PvP can be irritating and also very fun. Im glad I ended up on a PvP server or else I think I would be missing a large part of the game.

Best advice I can give you: be a Shaman
Blizzard loves Shamans
My cousin's lvl 60 Shaman goes toe to toe with Warriors (and just about every other class) and wins every time.

Stay away from the Hunter class...we won't be improving (or getting fixed) anytime soon.
My poor Hunter has just gotten worse (nerfed) as time goes on without any of the major bugs getting fixed.

My theory is that Blizzard wants to either get rid of the Hunter class or make everyone that plays one quit or roll an alt and use their Hunter for only solo PvE to grind for loot.

Hunters in group PvP are deadly. Let your team zerg ahead while you sit back and pop people off. Not all classes are "uber" at everything. Nothing puts a smile on my face more than seeng a hunter pick apart a toon that stupidly concentrated on me instead of the hunter with the big ol gun. *SPLAT*. Hunters are awesome support if they choose to play their class that way. Only thing you need to make sure is keep see invis up if a rogue sneaks past and decides to try and suprise you. Don't worry...priests get pwned by fury warriors at 60. Get a fury UD warrior and you have 60 seconds of immunity to fear. Throw in a free action potion and you might as well call yourself DEAD.

Hunters and warlocks will be in higher demand in the instances with the group size cap because of their pet and minions is like an extra character without taking up a person slot.

I started as a troll priest and got to lvl 24 and re-rolled. I went for an undead warlock who is now lvl 60. Only problem with warlocks right now is soul shard management, hopefuly this gets better after the soul shard only pouch. I keep 2 16 slot bags for soul shards on me and a spare 16 slot of soul shards in the bank.

IMHO warlocks and Hunters have it made for solo pve.

depends on your playing style and what you like.
i like to solo, and I like PvE and I like exploring. Druid for me is the only choice. As a healer I am welcome in instances as well.

im not sure about hunters though. they are great in pvp and pve!, but in general most of the raid groups im in never have any. the pets usually cause too much trouble w/aggro. the only thing a hunter brings is a ranged attack, which is cool, but hardly indispensible

I love the retarded overreactions that idiots like you and half the morons on the WoW forums get every time a patch comes out.

OMG MY CLASS NOW DOES 1% LESS DPS I HOPE BLIZZARD AND ALL THEIR FAMILIES AND ANCESTORS BURN IN HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY AND THEIR ANUSES REPEATEDLY RAPED BY THE BARBED FLAMING PENISES OF SATAN'S MINIONS.

I've seen the videos, and my class is hardly "doomed" with the new patch's effects. Also, Blizzard's guys have officially said that the excessive dodging *IS* a bug and is being looked at.

I dont see why everyone says that the pets pull shit...my pet has NEVER cased us to be attacked when in a group. And also, since I'm a hunter, I use my RANGED attacks...I never melee unless the target rushes me...melee is what warriors and such are for, I just stand in the back poping shit off w/ arrows, and I'm very effective too. So why so much hate on the hunters?

Now is this bug being looked at the same way, players gettin rez sickness when they rez a pet, or the pet speed bug since beta, or the dps drop ? All these problems are "being looked at".

I have a 60 hunter on Eonar, and testing on the test server, coupled with the "hunters suck" mentality most players in WoW have, does not bode well for the hunter class.

Hunter pets only cause aggro troubles if the hunter is stupid and doesn't know what they're doing. No different from warlock pets, except Hunter pets are more durable and do more damage.

In instances, the main role my hunter plays is tracking, ranged dps and squishy defence. I usually stay back by the cloth wearers and lay a freezing trap in front of them. Then I plink away at the main tank's target until some mobs aggro on the cloth wearers (as they inevitably do). If the mob hits the freezing trap and it sticks, then all is good. Otherwise, I can hit it with a Distracting shot and sic the pet on em. The pet and I can tank the mob until the tank is done with whatever they're killing. Tracking is important because I can tell you exactly how many mobs are behind that door or around that corner. And more importantly, I can tell you exactly when patrols are coming, even before we see them. Also, don't underestimate the amount of ranged damage a hunter can do. When my Aimed shot crits, I can do 1500 to 1800 damage. My regular shots crit at 450 to 650 damage. Plus I have a couple of AoE attacks that can do quite a bit of damage as well. Hunters can perform a lot of valuable roles in a group. ESPECIALLY if people will learn not to hit the frozen mobs.

a) Who cares about the rez sickness bug? It only affects other people who try to rez your pet. Newsflash: You have a spell to rez your own pet. USE IT. The main healer's mana is far too valuable to waste rezzing your pet.

b) The dps drop only matters to the idiots who pull out a slide rule every time they start up the game. My hunter still does a shitload of damage, especially if you count the additional damage my pet does. Yes it's lower than before, but hunters should NOT be doing more damage than rogues or mages. Those classes have higher dps because it's balanced out by them having to wear shitty armor. Hunters can wear mail, *and* we have a pet.

I do agree that the pet speed bug sucks shit and I do wish they would hurry up and fix it already. But it isn't a game killing bug and I'm not going to delete my hunter character because my pet runs slowly after being dazed.

A) I know I and many hunters care about the pet rez bug. True, hunters do have a pet rez spell, but if used it virtually drains all the hunters mana, and it cost a lot more mana then any healers comprable rez spell. Draining all the hunters mana, to heal his pet, severly lowers the hunters dps.

b) Regardless if you use a slide rule or not, a DPS nerf ... is a DPS nerf. And hunters should be doing more damage then rogues and mages. One need only look at Blizzard own description of a hunter on their site, to understand this.

The Hunter is a vicious damage dealer. With their ability to pull extremely well and hit monsters hard from far away, they certainly help take down monsters more quickly.

No where did I say that I would delete my character, nor that it is game killing. But these bugs combined with the new dps nerf, and the %hit nerf that will be added with the upcomming patch will do no good at all, it will only continue to nerf the hunter class.

Your pet is LESS important than other party members. Your healer should NOT be wasting their mana to try to rez your pet in battle when other party members are taking damage. Their mana should be used to heal the main tank or keep themselves alive. If your pet dies, let it stay dead until after the fight. I honestly don't see where the problem is here. Getting the healer to rez your pet during battle is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Outside of combat, it's not a big deal. Try carrying some water. It's not that expensive.

Please show me where exactly on Blizzard's site does it say that hunters should be doing more damage than rogues and mages. I've searched their description and I do not see it anywhere on there. And if you yourself can come up with a good reason why hunters should do more damage than rogues and mages other than "Blizzard said so!", I'd certainly love to hear it.

Rogues and Mages have far far less armor than Hunters. Their class relies on taking down a mob quickly so they MUST have high DPS.

I'm sorry but I don't see how this quote says that Hunters must do more damage than EVERY OTHER CLASS. And I don't want to get into a fucking stupid battle about semantics. It does not make ANY logical sense in terms of game balance to have hunters be the highest damage dealers in the game.

It is ridiculous that people continue to make excuses for Blizzard. Getting rez sickness when rezzing a hunters pet is not "working as intended", it is a bug. To make excuses about .. oh well you don't need to, or its not that important, just proves to them that you will accept a class full of bugs. And does nothing to suggest to them that maybe they need to fix the bugs they cause.

If you cannot accept the words from Blizzard own site about the class they designed as proof that the hunters should have a very high DPS then this is a useless conversation, as you already have it set in your head what you think they should be like. In the end all that matters is what Blizzard says as they are the ones who designed the game, I'm just asking them to step up and do it.

Your use of profanity is really not necessary, and it makes you look unintelligent.

Yes, I agree that Hunters SHOULD have a high DPS. But it should NOT be higher than mages or rogues. The way it currently is, Hunters STILL have a higher DPS than every other class in the game other than mages and rogues, even with the damage nerf. And that's the way it SHOULD be.

And I'm not making excuses for Blizzard. I just don't understand why people are screaming bloody murder about the stupid rez sickness bug when it doesn't, or rather, shouldn't affect anybody, because nobody other than the hunter should be rezzing the pet. Hell, I don't even know why they're allowing pets to be rezzed by anyone other than the hunter in the first place. All I know is that I have never once experienced this bug, because I have always been responsible for rezzing my own pet in every single party I've ever been in.

I don't think I am screaming bloody murder at all.

The mere fact that they allow pets to be rezzed by characters indicates there was a thought process behind it, and it was in-fact a feature added to the game for a reason. Just because you don't think players should rez the hunters pets, does not mean that everyone else feels the same way.

It does effect game play, it is a bug, does anymore really need to be said?

On top of this, attack power buffs will no longer work on hunters, even though Blizzards own site indicates that attack power buffs are intended to work on both melee attack power and ranged attack power.

If the Hunter class is any indication of the devs thought process, it is that, when they are too lazy to nail down a problem, they just nerf the class and hope for the best, which as we have seen clearly, only causes more problems.

We're not in school, we're not in a business meeting. I type the way I speak in casual conversation, and that involves the occasional profanity. I could say the same thing about your grammatical and spelling errors but I honestly don't give two fucking shits about proving my own intelligence on this forum.

Spelling and grammatical errors are just as you indicated, errors. Profanity on the other hand is not an error, you willingly use it. I'm just stating the facts, profanity does in-fact make you look less intelligent, ... its just common sense.

I'm going back to the original purpose of this thread.........be a shaman. Blizz loves shammy's they are tough, healers, spell casters, valuable in instances and great at PvP. The only class my lvl 50 sham consistently loses to are shadow priests. I can take down a 57 rogue if i don't get hit first (which is a rarity being that thats the big advantage to rogues.....oh well). Good luck.

I'm not concerned with a DPS drop with my Hunter...it's more that ranged attacks can now be Dodged and Parried with the new patch...what the hell is that???

Someone on the WoW official forums saw a Matrix Online ad that said "Want to dodge bullets but don't want to wait for the next WoW patch? Play the Matrix Online" :)

I also saw a screenshot of the test server that went like this:
Your Aimed shot was dodged by SoandSo
Your Autoshot was dodged by SoandSo
Your Mult-Shot was dodged by SoandSo
Your Autoshot was dodged by SoandSo
Your Arcane shot was dodged by SoandSo

Now at this point whoever you were attacking is in melee range and you're a few seconds from being dead. I don't understand the logic behind this change to ranged attacks...I miss plenty of times as it is. It's like Blizzard has a meeting and asks "what do you want to do in the next patch?" and someone says "let's piss off Hunters some more." No one really benefits from these changes at all. It's not like Warriors are saying "I can't wait until they nerf Hunter's because they keep kicking my ass."

Not true Bonko. Calling a person less intelligent for using profanity is by yourself applying the incorrect word. Intelligence is defined as "the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge". He may be less "civil", but definitely not less "intelligent". I've met many an idiot who never used profanity and many a genius who must have been the major stock supporters for soap companies in their youth.

If you are going to insult somebody, at least use the correct word.

P.S. Shamans are pretty cool. Very versatile and bliz does like them for some reason. Must be their guilty feelings over the Palaidin class :p

To the original poster...Pick a class/race that will compliment your playstyle. If you want to spend all of your time in instances rolling on hawt lewts ( :p ) then go with a warrior, priest or mage because you'll have a guranteed role to play. If you want to kill other players fast, go rogue. If you want to solo and be versitle in a group then go with a druid, warlock or shaman.

My honest opinion on hunters is wait before rolling one to see how the changes manifest. I have a 48 hunter and it rocks but I'm a bit anxious to see how the patch will affect us. But all in all, think about what you want to do in the game and roll accordingly, educate yourself on the abilities of each class/race and take every other player's opinions with a grain of salt.

What is with you man? You have never played a hunter, and you haven't even created your character yet, and you're still preaching as if you're the king of all that Blizzard has ever created. You also haven't played a hunter on the test server. You have NO IDEA what the status of the hunter was pre OR post patch.

Again, who are you and why do you feel you can preach to the WoW community about how their class is doomed?
