Yeah im a poor mofo, what is the best video card performance/price/overclockability ratio for my current predicament ~_~.

There is no way in hell i can afford a 6800 ultra/gt or whatever the hell models there are right now. Would an overclocked 9700 pro equiv to a 9800 pro? Also i need some help on cheap/performance motherboards+cpus, I was thinking barton 2500+ with an nforce 2 chipsets cuz it overclocks e-z 3200+ speeds with decent ram.


I just need stuff that can run doom III/HL 2 OKAY (cuz im so used to pos comp i usually turn my gfx down to like 800x600 no AF or AA Lol.) Also, Is there any set date or approximate date as to when prices will drop yet the products will still be good?


I heard something about prices dropping MASSIVLY in fall but the merchandise will still be good for the games coming out etc. Sry if this was hard to read, parents kicking me off comp. U guys are smart ppl from what i see, Hope u can help! Thanks.
 
for around 400-500 you can build a great athlonXP comp. with a 9800 pro and a nf2 system...for like 600-700 you can get a basic A64 system with a 5900XT/5700U ... it all depends on yer budget

You're poor. So what? are you too lazy to knock off a liquor store? Granted, you'd need to hit two or three in order to get enough to buy an ultra or XT-pe.

Seriously, though, one word of caution. Don't buy the 9800se thinking it'll softmod into the pro. It's tempting for $120, but in the end it's really just a gamble. On the other hand, if you're the gambling type, go for it.
 
9800np you can get them for 160 and they perform great, equall with 9700pro's, and can be overclocked to 9800pro speeds. thats what i whent for when i was in your same situation, and i dont regret it

it plays farcry great with high settings, and all other games great, so you whont have to worry about that
 
I paid $198 for my Sapphire ATi Radeon9800PRO and I am very pleased.

I'm going to push my overclock a bit more after this weekend of burning it in :D
 
If you are strapped for cash save money on hte video card- and buy more ram. You can always turn down setting in a game but theres nothing worse than a game having to read or load fom your page file on your HDD instead of from ram. Last week I played Farcry at a friend's house wih only 256MB of ram. it took about 6 minutes to load because it had to write to the page file so much. Today I took my stick of 512 over to his house and stuck it in there (just my stick, not mixed with his) and the game loaded in about 45-60 seconds. and that was just with a 256MB increase. Much much faster in game too.

He has a regular Radeon 9600. not a SE, Pro, or XT, just a 9600 (128bit, better than the SE, not as good as the Pro or XT) And it ran Farcry at the maximum EVERYTHING, and it lagged only in shootouts. everything else had about a 24-28 FPS framerate. We turned down some settign like water and shadow detail and I didn't notice a big visual difference and it ran pretty smooth, not any real noticable choppiness. Now I'm not suggestign getting a 9600NP, I would go for a 9600XT. 136$ from Newegg, the Sapphire one. It has gotten pretty good reviews. It should run farcry pretty much maxxed out and it should run games like HL2 on medium settings or maybe even medium-high. Plus you will same some dough and will be able to get something IMo more useful, like a gig of ram instead of 512.

Don't belive people who say you can't run Farcry with a 9600 core card. I have seen it with my own eyes, and it didn't look a whole lot different than a 9800.

how about xp2500, nf7, pc3200 n 5900xt? or 9800se n try to do the mod.
i can run far cry high detail 1280x1024 with xp3000+ n 9700(270/270), should be able to run doom3 at 1024x768 high or med. havent got d3 yet..
 
fyi...9800np runs my Doom3 at 1024x768 High Detail No aa/af. On a P4 3.0c stock with 1 gb ram. Very playable get a solid 30fps, only when I played in god mode and BFG'd everything did I get stutter....
 
hey Dillusion, what are you putting in that $500 Athlon XP box? Just curious how what components you end up with for that ballpark price.

If your wanting to spend around 150 dollars, save up 40 dollars extra for a 9800, but if you dont want to, then I would suggest a 5700ultra, it gets better benchmarks then the 9600xt, and it completely owns the 9600xt if you overclock it.

Ditto that... and maybe a 9800 Pro ($205) instead of the 5900XT($185) since they are only about $20 apart in price.

And maybe a mobile XP 2500/2600... about $95-99, but really overclock GREAT on aircooling.

your exactly right, same core, same everything, just clocked down a bit, you can easially oc them up to pro speeds also:)
its a great deal
