Its not the computer I build. Its my dads computer, I have fixed many computers through the years and never experienced something like this.

It keeps going through a loop. Gives you the safe mode screen (log on using last safe config etc) and continues to go through that loop...
Then when i put the recovery disk in to reformat it gives me this message :

\minint\system32\ntkrnlmp.exe error 4096

So is this the HD that has gone bad? its an HP computer and like I said all it does is goes through the loop. I have tried removing the hd installing it back, tried reformating and repairing which did not work... Tommorow I will most likely buy a new hd for him if you all thnk its the HD that is bad. Please help guys

Is it a multi-processor/core setup? It could be misidentifying it as such.

Could try a Linux live CD to rule out the hard drive.

I did some search on the google and some japanese site that I translated made it seem like maybe its a memory problem... If I remember correctly he had one stick of memory. could that be why it said error 4096? so new sticks of memory might fix it then?

As I thought. ntkrnlmp.exe is only for multi-processor systems I believe. No wonder it's freaking out.

Try clearing the CMOS. If that doesn't work it may well be the RAM. Memtest86 will tell you for sure.

Thanks for the reply... Here is my dilemma though... I cant even get to dos it just constently runs through the cycle. How do I get to CMOS to clear it? and how do I run memtest when I cant get to safe mode?

Although what your saying makes sense.. He said he downloaded some update recently (not sure if it was from Microsoft or some other update) so maybe that screwed up the system.

Clear the CMOS using a jumper on your motherboard. Look in the manual or try to find it on the board.

Wouldn't be the first time an OS update has screwed a system. Did he begin experiencing this problem imeadiately after the update?

Memtest86 boots from a floppy disk or CD so that wouldn't be a problem.

Might have to search on how to set the OS back to uniprocessor mode. Try the above (and clearing the CMOS) first though. It may be a red herring.

Thanks for your help. I will try the CMOS and then Ill go buy and install some new memory sticks.

I never did MEMTEST before... Ill go to the web site right now and check it out

It's pretty simple. Put it on a floppy or CD, boot from it, let it run (at least an hour. The longer the better) and it will tell you if any errors occur.
