but will still sound pants if not properly amped....
 
I'd consider the new Senn HD 555s for a moderately low impedance headphones. They're about $150. They'd also benefit from an amp but are less hampered by the lack of one. They probably have lower overall quality (and a somewhat different sound) than amped HD 580s, but can get by with less of an investment.
 
I'd go with the Audio-Technica A900 for comp use and no amp.

PSH! Those have crap bass!

Get the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro or non-Pro or even the new DT 770 - 80 ohm.

Also check out the Ultrasone 550 Beatmaster and the Audiotechnica ATH 900. Those two don't require an amp, but benefit if you get one. The 550 Beatmaster would benefit more from an amp than the ATH 900.

For the basshead in all of us, I suggest the DT 770 line. Those of course do need an amp...well maybe not the DT 770 - 80.

Sennheiser HD 580, Beyerdynamic DT 770, ATH 900, or Ultrasone 550?

Not sure if this is the cheapest place for the HD 580s, but www.meier-audio.de is the undisputed place to get Beyerdynamic or Ultrasone. Both are based in Germany. Meier is also headquartered in Germany.

Only place I know of that sells the ATH 900 is www.audiocubes.com

They are 190ish.
