Getting a prescott or a northwood 3.0ghz p4. Everyone is saying do not get the prescott etc etc but i am uncertain of what to really do. I would like to overclock just a little :). What should i do?

I am upgrading from

1.33ghz amd t-bird
gf3 ti200
256mb ram

TO

3.0ghz p4
ASUS p4c
1gb ram
ATI 9800PRO
PC3200 kingston hyperX
Antec Case/PSU

So either CPU will be a HUGE jump for me for gaming and photoshop.
So what would be yalls suggestions, please be nice :).

I would say, just wait for P5 to come out. It's not really that far and I think it will be better. More upgradability. If you get prescott or northwood, you will not be able to upgrade processor much.

The Socket T Prescotts should be out sometime in the second quarter of this year. I also would not use the Antec Sonata case. I just put a system together with this case and I DESPISE it.

you should never play the waiting game with hardware cause theres somethign always new on the horizon.

what don't you like about the antec sonata?

The hard drive rails are turned sideways, making it awkward to get the IDE ribbons onto my IS7. Also, what's the point of having an air filter in the front if you cut out ANTEC on the side panels, allowing dust to come in? It just seems very poorly thought out to me.

Only suggestion I have is get the memory using Hynix chips (PC3700+) or Winbond BH-5's. You will be able to overclock further and easier. It's something to do with intel's dual channel chipsets and memory ratios other than 1:1.

would you mind posting some links bc i had a hard enough time picking out the ram i got :p

For Kinston these are supposed to have BH-5, the way to tell is the rated timings of 2-2-2. It's rated PC3000, but you will end up using ratios anyways, and good odds you'll be able to OC the memory as well. Note intel dual channel systems normally need 2-3-2 timings, 2-2-2 buggers things up unless you are lucky.

For BH-5 there's these Kingston HyperX

256MB $68

512MB $109

Or if you want to spend more

Any Mushkin Black level 2
Corsair XMS PC3200 rev 1.1 only! Rev2 is CH-5, not good.

Or

OCZ PC4200 EL
Uses newer rev Hynix chip, there is other memory with this rev, but I couldn't list it off the top of my head. I'll warn you my chips top out 2MHz below spec, but IS7 is a bit limiting in the VDIMM department. (my lone complaint about the board)

Note: I've seen reports older revs of hynix chips have the same problem as the new winbond chips when using non 1:1 ratios. I believe most PC3700 and higher with CAS2.5 will be the newer rev, but I'm only sure on the memory I listed.

Why would i need to get BH5 PC3000 ram? When i posted PC3200 that run at 2-3-2 and does 434mhz? Do not flame me as i have no clue what im talking about with this stuff. I am just curious as to why you suggest lower rated ram. Also someone said to get paired ram and not to buy each ram stick by its self.

In the old Intel, prescott would be the Pentium 5. It adds SSE3 just as PIII was a PII w/SSE.

The old rumor mill is pretty quiet on the Pentium 5 (if they even call it that). I would bet my money on their x86-64 chip being called a Pentium 5 (or whatever, just not Pentium 4). That will probably be a year from now. Guestimates of course.

BTW don't listen to these bozo's that say get PC3000.

So true, I've been waiting for 1.5 years.

You've been waiting! I've been waiting! :p

Tomorrow might be upgrade day - It could be a P4 2.4C / Abit IS7 / 1024MB Geil PC3200, or perhaps I'll just buy another gun. I hate decisions.

But, yeah, playing the waiting game? Silly thing to do, really. New stuff comes out all the time - Buy now to fit your needs, and upgrade later if it doesn't. Of course, I have very modest computing requirements so I can get away with using a ... how old is this rig now? I don't even remember!
