ok....HUGE usb issues with new shuttle.

i recently just bought a new case, a shuttle 533/800MHz FSB Intel CPU, Model ST61G4L
Chipsets: ATI RS300 + IXP150

It's quite obvious something is wrong with my USB interface. Every three days or so, my USB ports literally stop responding when I do something (it has almost always consisted of viewing a Quicktime file or opening an MP3), requiring a complete shutdown. No amount of replugging in my peripherals to the various USB ports helps.

now, it just happened again when I plugged my USB flashcard reader in.. everything froze. Mind you, the computer itself keeps running fine, but the USB simply stops working. So I shutdown and booted up again (with the reader still plugged in), and I was able to view the external drive contents, but as soon as I began to copy the files, everything froze up again. so now i know it's not just a random USB problem, but it also completely screws up when i plug in a third device (besides mouse & keyboard) and try and do anything with it.

i checked my voltage readings for everything, and they read out as..

Vcore1: 1.52V
Vcore2: 1.50V
+3.3V: 3.31V
+5V: 5.08V
+12V: 12.16V

-12V: -12.03V
-5V: -0.48V
+5V: 4.97V
Vbat: 3.18V

....so obviously my readings arent that bad...so i don't know what the hell could be causing this? is it really the PSU? i don't understand this at all!
 
further information....

i'm using win2k.

also, even after a fresh startup, with nothing running, the instant I plug the flashcard reader in, the USB power completely goes out (all the lights on my keyboard turn off, everything stops responding, etc). I just did it again with the voltage monitor running, and nothing changed.. so I don't think it's being dramatically sapped of power, especially since a CF reader is such a simple device.

However, I unplugged the reader before shutting down, and Windows detected that I unplugged a device and displayed one of the obligatory messages regarding it.. of course, the USB devices still did not work, but Windows somehow knew that something was unplugged. Wtf.
 
Hmmm. I have the one with the card reader. I was having a weird problem with the front ports not doing anything but in about 3 days they all of a sudden started working and they've worked ever since.

Make sure all the drivers are installed. Check the settings in the BIOS. Check advanced properties in the Device Manager for the USB Hubs. Make sure they all show power available to all ports is 500mA and that the bandwidth is 10% available. Otherwise you got problems. If another fresh install doesn't work I'd RMA it. And when you do a fresh install, I do then install and then the newest Service Pack immediately after you get to the desktop. Then after that go to windows update and download all patches. Once thats all done then I start installing the rest of my crap.

does that all look okay to you? one of them says Bandwidth consumed is 23%...is that normal? if not, how should i fix it?
 
my card reader doesnt work. however, i havent had a problem with the other USB ports until just recently when trying to use a wireless-g usb 2.0 adapter. it works for a while and then all of a sudden it loses internet connection. that part is fine but when i go to reconnect it, all my usb ports shut off. so my mouse stops but i can still restart the computer using the keyboard (ps2). and then it still doesnt shut off the whole way/...
 
i think thats odd with the 23% one. the rest look fine. have you tried clearing CMOS?
 
Get a Powered USB hub and then hook up your USB devices to it. Many embedded chipsets cannot supply the necessary 5v to the USB device. The voltage would account for the lockups during access. As far as the card reader is concerned, does it come with a molex power connector, or, is it powered also through the internal USB connector on the motherboard? Again, it sounds as if you have a device that is too power hungry for the system and a powered hub usually can address this problem.

Yeah I agree. I had a game pad, Muvo NX 256, Rio Karma and a printer hooked up all at once and never had a problem with em not to mention the card reader thats hooked up internally. What kind of usb devices are you running?
 
USB is specced to only provide around 500mA on USB lines. Not very much and definently not enough if your running power hungry equipment.
