Ok, wanting you guys to build me a 'decent' server for like 1200ish..... no monitor,kb or mouse needed... just a box....

The thing that REALLY matters to me is a rock solid motherboard and 'decent'(not extravagent) case....

Yes I know what I'm doing, LOL.... I just have been outta the loop for awhile and not really sure the route I should go.... FAST single Quad Core Xeon? SLOW DUAL Quad Core Xeon, DUAL AMD whatever it is that AMD has....

I will be running 2k8 server on it, and PERHAPS SQL 2008 or Exchange 2007..... so it needs to be 'fairly' powerful...

And NO I won't buy from Dell, thanks for the offer though. I want to build my own... why?? Cause I wanna!

You don't necessarily need a powerful machine to run Exchange or SQL - with SQL, it depends what you're using it for.

More details would be nice.

$1200 and stable is all that I ask, as well as LOTS of HDD space I should also mention.... at least a TB....

Are you looking for a tower or rackmount unit?
For the rackmount route, you can look on Newegg and check out Supermicro's barebones.
You can get a pretty good system on there. Just slap in a cpu (or two), some ram, hdds and you're set.
How many users?

So you can place emphasis on the parts necessary... If its just a storage server, you don't need a high end mobo or CPU, or, necessarily a fast hard drive or drives.

Conversely, if its a DB server, you need loads of RAM, a fast CPU, and a decently fast hard drive or drives.

If you just want a general server thats not specializing in anything, thats pretty easy.

Well i have a Dual 2800+ MP with a raid 5 array and 2GB ram that is currently doing the job, but I want to upgrade to 2k8 server and SQL 2008 instead of 2k server and SQL 2000 that I am currently using.

I am assuming I will need alot more power to run 2k8 server and SQL 2008??

My database is currently only 800MB at the moment, but by this fall(when school start again) I am anticipating close to a gig....

I was kinda looking more for ideas on Mobo and processor, and a good brand of ram, and HDD to use...

I have in my mind either two slow 771 Quad-Core Xeons and 4GB of ram with a raid 5 array or perhaps a single really fast 775 QC Xeon with the same 4GB(or maybe even 8GB) and the same Raid 5 array.... like maybe 4 750GB HDD's??
