My first ATI card. I bought the 3780 to replace my 8800GTS..Good choice or not, this card looks awesome, and I am sure as the drivers get better, the performance will improve..

So I sure hope i like it. :D

1 3870 is not as fast as 1 8800GTS ( as far as I see in benchmarks) I still think you made a good choice, as you can buy another 1 for a CF setup. I actually did the same thing. I bought 2 3870's to replace my 8800gts 640, and a new Asus Maximus motherboard to compliment the crossfire speeds

NCIX.com

Got it for 248.00 total
Nice, I ordered mine from Dell and just got my ship date pushed back to 12/17. I might cancel that and grab a card from NCIX.

The 3870 is faster than the 8800GTS 640 in most games and smokes the 320. The new G92 512 is much faster than the 3870 though.

Well the new GTS might be faster then 1 3870, but it isnt faster then 2 3870's in crossfire I hope?

Then we can say:

Well 2 3870's might be faster than 1 new GTS, but 2 3870's aren't faster than 2 GTS's in sli I hope?

I would have to think that the drivers for the 38xx series cards are still a little pre-mature. I wouldn't be surprised if performance for these cards will continue to improve with future drivers.

A single 3870 is faster than a single 8800GTS 320MB in almost all cases, and faster than a 8800GTS 640MB in more cases than not :)

i swear, people really need to stop quoting benchmark numbers, there is certainly something to be said for first-hand experience, but at the very least take benchmarks with a grain of salt. ask newls1 about the issues he was having with the 3870's. he'd ask posters about their opinion of these new ati cards, so many people responded with 'its awesome' then link some benchmark. these cards are nice, certainly at 219.99 and 179.99, but in live gaming with features turned up, there isn't a single ati card that will game better than an 88 series card carrying a 512+ frame buffer.

Depends. The 3800s stumble with AA, as can be expected from the architecture, but they're quite capable otherwise, typically able to deliver at or around 8800 GTS performance. Performance might go up a tad here and there with driver revisions, but I don't expect anything wild. G8x/G9x, on the other hand, is pretty much "done".

And by the way, this "frame buffer" nonsense needs to STOP. Video memory is not "frame buffer" -- the frame buffer is the frame buffer.

Theres a guy who posted yesterday complaining about the downgrade he made going to a 3870 from a gts.

Well, it is a downgrade. 1 3870 isnt as fast as a GT or GTS (older version) but close in some cases. I bought 2 3870 to have crossfire performance, knowing that 1 3870 would be a downgrade from my 640mb GTS.

Yawn, real hand experience from a system that actually has a working configuration and nothing is borked, my 3870 and 8800GT compared side by side, I do not see a difference, 8800GT shows higher FPS in some cases, but real world gaming difference is not noticed.

So STFU to the people saying the 3870 is crappy or whatever the case may be, you speak of actual usage, I just gave you my response, btw, this was tested on the 3870's only working driver's, 7.11 Catalyst.

Benchmarks dont really show much in the real world. The 3870 and the gt are pretty much on line with each other.

2.2 ghz 939 system dual core, 2 gigs at 2 3 2 timings 1T

xp pro cherried out with sp3 and no apps loaded...

all i can say is that stalker, hellgate, and 2142 all play on max settings at 1920x1200 with my ati 3870. No stops, bumps, whatever, smooth flowing images, and they look amazing.

Note: STALKER must have the latest update from thefloatingpoint.org or else it runs like crap. all the benchmark places do not even update the drivers. without it, youll get like 40% less frames when all is cranked. also, AA does not work but can interupt the game. AF on max is what ATI is all about, so that works perfectly.

I think that is all that matters. I think crysis is kiddie shit sorta e-penis game. it was like farcry, which was also a kiddie shit e-penis game.

OK? Most of your post is based on opinion...I think most reviewers use the latest drivers available at the time of testing for their cards.

The old GTS is still a little faster and has a dual-slot cooling solution. There's no doubt that the 3850 is a great card for the money, but the 3870 is a little too expensive for the performance level at $248 USD. I definitely wouldn't swap a GTS for one, but I would buy one as an upgrade from a lower card for $220 or less.

In my opinion, the OP made a bad choice but if it works well for him/her then Game On!.

My point in buying the 3870 and dumping my 8800GTS 640mb card WAS FOR CROSSFIRE PERFORMANCE, AND NOTHING SHORT OF THAT! I couldnt buy another 8800gts for SLi as Intel chipset boards are sleeping with ATi, and only allow for crossfire, not SLi. Trust me, I would have much rather bought another 8800GTS. All in all, my 2 3870's perform fantasticaly together, and I will even go as far as saying that crossfire scales better then SLi. Here is a post I made showing my performance numbers in 3dmark06, and a quad core OC @ 3.83GHz http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=169845
Very happy with my choice, but people have to understand that 1 3870 IS NOT AS FAST AS 1 8800GTS 640mb:)

Now, too utilize 2 3870's in a crossfire situation, I have to have a board that supports it, right? Meaning, the board I have has a PCI-Express slots, but I think it is for SLI only..
So i would need to change out my MB wouldnt I?

8.43 drivers worked much better/faster/smoother/less crashes than 7.11

if i had a gts, i dont think I would bother if I was just a gamer.

however, 8800gts of old series did not have purevideo, the version that the crappy 8600 had. UVD is supreme and so the idle wattage of 3870. the money spent on the 640 version of the gts is rather prohibitive when looking at buying a 3870 for only a small improvement.

side note: current/new gts is a ripoff. you can get a gtx for almost the same price which goes faster......

I think that 3850 512mb with better drivers would kick 8800gt 512mb 's ass
and also 3870 512mb with better drivers would kick 8800gts 's ass
