So i recently build 2 systems with an ati 4870 for my friends. (I'm an nvidia fan) but bang for the buck and benches showed promises so i decided to use these cards for those systems. Both systems running 4g of memory and vista ultimate x64. Now the cards seem good but the drivers and software from ati is the worst i seen in years. Had to use a 2nd old vga monitor just to get it to work with a 24" display (had to switch to low hz rate as it defaulted to one that was not displaying right after driver install) Apparently it is a known problem and issue. So getting that out of the way i figured it would be all good from there... boy was i wrong multi monitor support is iffy at best had to toy around to get a 2nd display (a wacom/cintiq design display) to work properly somehow the card thought monitor 1 was monitor 2 and got drivers and color profiles mixed up. After that was working i thought things would be smooth. Wrong again, both systems are plagued bu random monitor shut offs in desktop mode when not running 3d applications. The monitor will randomly blink on and off. Sometimes once sometimes more and sometimes wont come back on. System will still be powered on and responsive just monitor will stay black or keep blinking randomly. So that's 2 different systems 2 4870s from different manufactures and same issues, tried different drivers and no go. Sometimes they will run fine for a few days and sometimes they will go haywire. I'm more thanks satisfied in the cards performance but the software issues have to be fixed as it makes the product horrible. The cards aren't overheating, there is more than enough power, everything is rock solid. And from what i understand it only happens in desktop mode. I tried searching left and right for a solution to this issue but came up empty handed. If anybody could shed some light as to what is causing this i would be forever grateful. Please don't post solutions like reinstall the driver or format the systems, i wasn't born yesterday.

PS: I apologize for the ranting nature of this thread but this is very annoying. I thought these cards were flagship cards made by reputable manufacturer... maybe i was wrong.

from what I see you're having a problem with the drivers. Normally the drivers on the CD are old and outdated. Pick up CCC 8.10, it's a monster. Very well laid out.
 
I never use cd drivers, after windows install i grabbed whatever was newest. :D what are those CCC drivers you speak of tho. I haven't used much ati in years last time i did ati on my own rig i did omegas. Which don't seem to be updated these days.
 
Go to the ATI site and download Catalyst Control Center version 8.10, I have it running on Vista x64 at my house on a 4850, haven't had a problem. Plus, it includes a fan speed monitor and tweaker.
 
Ohh yeah that's been done :) Thought it was a modified driver set. The systems are running newest drivers and control center.
 
About the whole monitor blinking problem.. Are you sure this isn't vista built in 'hibernation' effect? You can move the mouse and nothing happens, fans still spin, but you have to hit the keyboard for it to wake up.
 
Its not hibernation/sleep that's off. That happens while the pc is in use actually web browsing, photoshop running etc, in the midst of mouse movements.
 
I believe the flickering monitor issue might be an issue with the bios clocks. Use GPU-Z and report the idle speeds.
 
Good idea, i was suspecting throttling or jumping between clocks. I will remote into that machine once the person who's home gets home and see what we got.
 
I experience none of the problems the OP describes, but then I'm only using a single monitor.

I had this slight issue until I flashed the bios on my visiontek 4850 on my triple monitor setup.
 
Got him to send me a SS of his gpu-z.

Even with the latest drivers, I have some of these issues with my 4850 under Vista x64. It's really sad that ATI/AMD cannot get their drivers working properly, especially after so many attempts
 
That's interesting....I'd be interested in seeing if a bios flash would help him, but if he's a novice user, this isn't recommended =/
 
I'm having the same kind of problems with my 4850 running windows XP. I thought it was the video card but I've had THREE different 4850's now and they're all doing it. I guess its just the card/drivers. :(
 
Had no issues with Vista 64-bit and CCC with my 4870x2. FWIW.
 
Whilst i have no problems i do not use dual monitors, interesting if this is a more widespread problem. Does it mention anything in the release notes, if it is a large issue it is usually mentioned.
 
The only standing issue for my 4870x2 is texture flicker in Unreal Engine 2/2.X/3 games after coming out of sleep mode, rebooting fixes it.

I do not normally run dual monitors but I have hooked my computer up to my 40" Samsung HDTV, it had no issues running both the 24" and 40" screens at once in side by side mode, in clone mode I did notice a rather large drop in fps in games which I figure is normal.
 
It was observed that during the times when it blinks the core clocks down to 500mhz. Could it have something to do with vistas aero 3d desktop? What is your recommended course of action, any setting in drivers/ccc for that stuff?
 
In my machine no matter what I do there is no video via DVI on my benq 24". Now I know its not the monitor because my Macpro beams perfectly.
New vista 64 install and newest drivers.
 
4870x2 with 3007WFPHC, Vista 64 and 4gb ddr3 - no issues.... this is bizarre.
 
msi k9a platinum + vista 32bit + radeon 4850 equals fail.I get a blank screen and have to go into safe mode and uninstall driver to get monitor to work.This has been going on for 6 weeks.The ati/microsoft brain trust unable to sovle problem.Have gone back to xp problem solved.

btw these parts are compatible according vista update advisor and ati web site.NOT.:D
 
When i installed the 8.10 firsttime, i overclocked, it cause my screen to go grey after about 5 mins in windows, i formatted, fresh install and left it at stock clocks and never had the issues since..

also are the LCD's viewsonic if so ViewSonic and ATI have had problems working together in the past.

Maybe it is your motherboard? cause vista 32 works fine wit ATi cats 8.10, i had to put in vista 32 for a few days as i kept leaving my x64 discs at work, and didnt have any troubles.
 
Never had any issues with 4870 running in Vista Ultimate 64 here. I have 2 screens AND a TV using the s-video out (which I turn on or off according to whether I plan to watch a movie or not). I'm using the 8.541 drivers (AKA hotfix#1). 8.55.1 (AKA hotfix#2) gave me performance issues in 3D games so I dumped it.
 
No problems here with Vista X64 and a 4850. I run dual screens also.

4850 cannot do tri CFX sorry :p. THE MORE YOU KNOW!

I am running 4870 on Vista Home 64bit no problem so far on 8.10.
 
System in sig with both a Dell 2407 and Acer 22" POS /w Vista 64 Ultimate, no issues.

Pehaps this is the problem. Have you tried disabling Aero? That would point the finger squarely at the 3D clock changing uring idle moments.

If that is the case, then it may be that your card needs a BIOS flash.
 
Just thought I'd post my info

I run Vista x64 Ultimate

Run 3 monitors off 2 4850s. Flickering occured until I did a bios tweak to make sure my card operating the two monitors wouldn't clock below a certain level. There was a post here in the ATI forums, I'm trying to find it but its very very old =/

Thats not that hard to fix, Boot up under vga then go in your Catalyst control panel and check on limit refresh for high resolution displays or whatever that's called in there.
 
thats weird, i ahve had 4850 xfire and single, and 4870 crossfire and single and never experienced this problem. I have had issues installing drivers though at times, but once they in they work nice.

I didnt say I had them running tri CFX. I'm stating the fact that I've RMA'd my 4850's twice and had 3 DIFFERENT cards from 2 different vendors and they all do the same thing.
 
I've had similar issues with Vista 32 and CCC. Upon exiting "Blank Screen Saver" the video would flicker continuously and never catch-up requiring a reboot. My setup is dual display also. I solved my problem by removing the current version of CCC and installing an older version.
 
I was having a huge problem with Ati CCC 8.10 and the 8.10 hotfix drivers for Vista 64 Ultimate. Being as I just bought Fall Out 3 and Far Cry 2 and finding out that crossfire performance was less than stellar on the 8.9. I was trying all types of configurations to get those drivers to work.

After installing either and connecting both crossfire cables on 4850's it would BSOD when the desktop would come up. So the overclock was put back to default but the problem would persist. I then would try the 8.9's and those would work perfectly.

So I looked around and found the 8.11rc1 beta release. From what I read the only difference is the updated OpenGL driver everything else is the same as the 8.10 release.

Installed those drivers and I was up and running with no errors. Although I don't think that these are giving enough a boost as the normal hotfix drivers.

On Far Cry 2 benchmark w/ the CCC 8.9 I would receive 45-46 fps average using DX9 with the lowest dip at 30fps. DX10 was running at 52 fps average. With the 8.11rc1 release DX9 = 53 average and DX10 = 60fps constant.

The only problem I ran into was The Witcher. It would give me black lines going left to right that reminded me when the old tv tube screen where on a channel with bad reception.

Fall Out 3 also worked fine with these drivers. I haven't tried Call of Duty 4 but I'm sure it'll be fine.
