Well... I was messing around with my system today, trying to figure out maxes for different stuff in my system.

Anyway, I ended up changing too many settings in BIOS and then it wouldn't POST.. The BIOS was giving me a hard time clearing also.

So I decided to just leave the clear jumper on for a few hours as well as leave the battery out.

While I was doing that, I decided to re-do my heatsink, use arctic silver instead of alumina, and also replace my top 80mm case fan with a 120mm fan, and last but not least, replace my 80mm vid card shroud fan with a 92mm fan.

After putting the heatink back on, I messed with the tightness of the hold down bolts while in BIOS... before adjusting I was pleased to see a 35c temp as it was at 37c before.

After tighting it up a bit more, I was able to get it to hover in between 32-33c... oh yeah.

Now I am running Orthos as I type this... max temp is now 51-52c. Before it was getting up to 59-60c.

Oh yeah.. the Thermaltake Big Typhoon still rocks.. even for a CPU that is gobbling up a bit over 170 watts :) - I used the overclocked CPU calculator available at multiple sites on the web.

Oh yeah.. the air coming out of the top case fan is a bit cooler now also... probably cause it moves about 3 times as much air as the sad 80mm fan that was on there.

hooray for you. I just dropped my temps today too. I lost 10c by lapping both my heatsink and ihs. Awesomeness

Yeppers, its a good feeling to see those temps drop from your own little mods. I'm not [H]ard core enough to risk my ihs but I think almost any heatsink can benefit from a lapping job (that sounded so cyber-dirty  ).

Which core does the BIOS report?

I have a Quad Core and that single number they report to me doesn't mean much -_-

You could always run Coretemp in Windows and mess with the tightness while in Windows...

Yeah.. I kinda wonder which one it reports in BIOS also.... the difference in temps according to the older version of coretemp was max 3c.. now I get about 5c difference.. but the new core temp seems to stagger the readings more than the old one (updates for core temps are more spread out).. so I can't really tell.

Then again, should the idle temp in windows not move around at all?

I couldn't get the CPU loads tempos down at all by messing with the tightness while running Orthos in Windows.... almost ripped a fingernail off with a fan blade though....
