Well, because of an awesome deal on NCIX.com, I picked up an eVGA 7800 CO for 290$ CAD shipped... (that's 255 USD including those awesome Canadian taxes :rolleyes: ). I plug the card in and booted my computer. As the title of this thread says, Oh my god, this thing's loud. Now, I dont know if it's just because the front of my case is completely open with mesh, but this card is louder than my 3 120mm aluminum radiator fans at 12v.

So, why's this in the watercooling forum you ask? I need some advice on watercooling this loud mother-fcuker. Unfortunatly, my wallet's run pretty dry recently (unlike the bottom of my case, another funny and related story) so this has to be done pretty much on the cheap. I dont mind cooling the ram with ramsinks, but I really can't afford one of those $100 danger den blocks. Any suggestions?

PS, I've got a Swiftech MCP-655, a DD TDX and a black ice Xflow 2.120mm rad on a 1/2 ID T-line Loop.

All would be a good choice. You could try and see if you can get something used. Any of the above offerings will come out to about the same price in the end.
 
if you're cheap like me you can get an Arctic-Cooling silencer on it from Jab-Tech for dirt cheap, like $30. Its silent even at full speed, and cools a lot better than that stock hair dryer motor

i know that he didn't specify......but only canadian stores are worthwhile. that NV silencer would run him $60 CDN (exchange rate, sales taxes, customs "handling fee" and high tech import fee) by the time it got to his door, and for that price he might as well get water cooling. if he buys in canada, he can get the NV silencer for a bit more than $30 CDN plus sales tax.
 
Maze 4 is about 40-50 bucks.

A Arctic Cooling should do the trick, quiet and good cooling. If not, the Zalman ones too, about $25, but they don't take out hot air from your case.
 
PolarFLO TT block is < 40 at some online stores :) But you'll need to find some ram sinks.
 
Awesome guys, thanks for the Canadian suggestions too. Anyways, I'll evaluate all of these solutions when I get some cash back in my wallet :). I'd probably rather go with watercooling, as I already have the capacity (an X2 at 2.5 1.35v on a dual BIP rad) to do so. Thanks again :)
 
You do know that the fan goes at full tilt 100% until you install the drivers.

Then it drops to 22% or so, and basically stays there, mine has never gone above 35% which is almost silent.

Hmmm, by all the drivers... do you mean the ones that come on the CD with it? I think I've installed everything... except the bundled software (a couple trial programs and some DVD viewing program)... I get just over 7000 3Dmark05s and run at 1280x1024 resolution, something you need the drivers to do... I can't check the version of my forceware drivers right now, but I know they're at least 82.xx something.
 
you should download the latest drivers from nvidia, the ones on the cd are probably pretty dated.
 
FWIW, Bigfoot no longer carries the MCW-55, they have the 60 now instead, I ordered a 55 not long ago and they sent me the new version.
 
You've definately got something fishy going on there. I am running two of these cards in SLI and they are very inaudible.
 
Evga cards? Did you use the driver from the install CD? My temperatures for 2D mode (I underclocked it a bit) is something like 36'c. Under a full 3Dmark test it never goes above 50c. Sound off?

nope, nothing fishy at all: different people have different scales of loudness.

if you're used to the stock cooler, chipset fan, PSU with blah fans installed it might not be noisy. in a decently quiet system, like the rig my friend who put in the silencer runs, the video card fan was WAY louder than anything else in there before he got that stock cooler off and out.

This is definitely true as I once lived across the street from a community airport and my friends always wanted to know how I could stand all the noise. After I had lived there a few months I would say "What noise?" ;)
 
Well I'm going to WC it anyways, so no worries there :). It's definitely louder than my PSU, dual radiator fans at 12v and a dual 80mm psu. Alot louder.
