Hi Hardforum. A couple of days ago, you guys helped me plan this rig:

The parts came in today and it looks good. Unfortunately, I think I've come across a road block.

I'm hoping that I made a silly/newbie oversight because I'm not exactly super experienced. However, I'm kind of worried because my gut tells me it's actually the parts themselves in questiont.

The power supply won't fit in the case. I picked at my imagination, wondering what went wrong. I'm hoping it's because I'm utilizing the case incorrectly. But the other very possible outcome is that this power supply is of a 'model' that is no longer 'supported' physically (or something like that??)

These are the pictures that describe the problem. The power supply kind of juts against this protruding 'mini-wall' that sticks out of the case. The 'protrusion' It is hard and inflexible. Basically, it makes the power supply look like it's too fat (unable to fit inbetween the case end, and the end of the 'protruding-wall'.

When kind of 'forced in' (it actually doesn't fit, I just kind of 'place it' there), the power supply wall actually hits the 'expansion slot blockers' supporting the theory that it just doesn't fit

Help whenever possible would be great. If it is a positive ID on 'incompatible power supply', recommendations for Power supplies for purchase (looking for cheap, but will support rig 'decently') would be greatly appreciated.

Looks thicker than a standard power supply, probably because it's a dell. Also one of the problems I have with dell computers. It looks like it might be overlapping with the area where the motherboard would go too, but you'd have to test that by putting it in there. If it doesn't you might just be able to put it in there anyways assuming you don't need the bottom expansion slot. You'd probably have to bend/cut that protrusion out though.

If you decide to get a new power supply it's going to cost for a decent quality one. Corsair is always my go-to, but seasonic and the antec earthwatts are great too, as are a few others. Here's a price for what I would get if I were you, and you decided you HAD to get a new power supply (I would exhaust options first though)

^It seems to be the case actually; if I recall correctly, I put the mobo in first, so the power supply was kind of colliding straight onto it. It was only then that I decided to remove the mobo, and try without it, thinking it was some sort of 'angle' problem or something
 
It's probably the Dell PSU not being the correct dimensions as someone else pointed out. Dell seems to think they need to make everything propriety so you buy their replacements/upgrades only. Measure the PSU if you can.

Budget? Reason I say buy a nice PSU is because it allows for a better upgrade path in the future.

my original thread details it better, but basically, I was just throwing together some old parts. All my brother wants is a computer that can run League of Legends. I had old parts, and it was a waste not to use them. It was supposed to be an easy throw together job; what I didn't anticipate was that a lot of 'parts' we had (random parts given from his friend) were incompatible or just flatout broken. The guys here helped me get a budget DVD and PC case. Now, given current circumstances, there's a chance that I'm going to have to throw in a power supply. It's not for me personally; I doubt he'll ever upgrade this thing in the future, we're just looking to power this thing up, in a kind of, 'minimum requirements' kind of way

That thing would be cutting it pretty close (I would think) in terms of getting it running with two 9800gts (if I remember correctly), but I'm also one who usually likes a lot of headroom in power supplies. How bad would the collision with the motherboard be if you bent down that protrusion and got the power supply in? I'd hate to see someone sinking money into an old computer without need when they wouldn't really gain anything.

I appreciate the sentiment. I don't think it's going to work however. Even if the protrusion disappeared, the case simply doesn't look like it was built to house such a thing. It'll hit the border housing the bottomost expansion slot. (even when the guard is removed, there's this another protrusion like thing that remains that sticks out, so somehow that'd have to be removed too. And I'm no DiY genius, so I'll probably chainsaw something important in half or something) :eek:
 
The problem is the dell proprietary psu, ATX specifies physical dimensions of 6"×3.4"×5.5". That dell psu is 6"×3.875"×6.5". That extra half an inch is what is overlapping the mobo and the last expansion slot. Since you don't want to mod it your best choice would be to go with a new psu. I would recomend
