yes, i myself will still be getting SB81P. i will clean up my current system a little and take lots of pictures, and then just post a thread here, offering it up for sale. if it sells, or it at least i see interest, i will proceed. i don't want to start building a new box, with no future for my current box. i dunno, i'm a little tired right now, can't think...

Yeah I will be piecing out what is left of my current system next week as well - after I get the shuttle up and running.
 
Mine came today. I just took it out of the box to check it out. I won't be able to build it for a couple of days (got a midterm tomorrow and I have to wait on my CPU to get here).

The thing that surprised me the most is how light it is. I doubt it weighs over 15lb. Of course it doesn't have anything in it yet, but still. Also, the entire CPU cooling setup is MASSIVE, it takes up the whole front of the case. And I noticed all the wiring is already routed very neatly.

I'll post some pics/updates later when I get the thing built.
 
Hey ender, any sign of that little green "swastika" wire. Have not heard back from utsava re: the presence of a wire in his 81P?
 
crap... I knew I forgot to do something when I was building it... I forgot to look for the green wires. Although looking back I don't remember seeing anything of the sort. But thats not a definitive answer. I'll look tonight if no one posts.

As for more impressions:
I now have the system up and running. Everything went without a hitch. Putting the LGA775 socket chip in is waaaay easier than people on these and other boards make it out to be. I knew the socket had the pins, but I was under the impression that the chip had little "holes" for the pins to go into.. but this is not the case... they are just contact pads with little chance of bending of pins.

The system runs great. I have a 3.2 GHz in there with 1 GB of Kingston DDR 400 RAM and a WD 200GB HD. For now I'm running off the integrated video card, which is fine for everything non 3D... The system runs pretty quiet. CPU temps have been in the low 50's for the most part. I ran through the fan speeds in the BIOS and dang can this thing get loud at 100%. But the good thing is I have had it running for a while and its always been wisper quiet. I'll have to test to see what happens when I run some real processor intensive apps.

Overall, I'm happy with the SB81P. Everything installed and configured without a hitch and runs great.

I didn't see it anywhere, but I couldn't remember exactly where it was. I'll look back over my pics later.

hey what are you using to monitor temps? MBM5 doesn't show the SB81P on its list, so I picked SB75G2, but I don't think it's reading them right because it says the CPU is 38, which seems kinda low.

Also, have you had any problems with your ps/2 ports?
 
dammit... i'm jealous. i won't be building this puppy any time in the immediate future - moving in an apartment, need to buy a whole lot of crap, since i've given all my shit away when i moved cities. so, lots of shopping, but not for computer parts. and i'm building a pc for my cousin (antec aria) - that'll take some more time... oh well. :)

Your specs are exactly the same as what I am going to put together. I might only go with 512mb of RAM. I am also going to use the integrated graphics card until I have enough cash for an X800XT.

The SB81P has only just hit the shores down here in Aust. and there is still a huge price variance. The cheapest is $632AUD which is about $457USD.

Using all my willpower to resist buying until the prices settle down a bit.

Anyone heard anything about ATI releasing an X800Pro in the PCI express format??

I've been monitoring temps the ghetto non-scientific way for the time being.... run computer for a while, do some stuff and then reboot and go into the bios to look at temps.

Does anyone know of a good free temp. monitoring program?

I have not had any problems with the PS/2 ports. Worked/detected keyboard and mouse right from the Windows installation on... I am using a microsoft USB mouse with that little PS/2 converter thing. One thing I have noticed is that when I shut the computer down, the mouse stays powered (i.e. it glows red). If I then unplug the mouse and plug it back in, its no longer powered. Kind of wierd... I wonder if it has something to do with it being USB... anyone know if this can be changed (in BIOS or otherwise?).

I havn't found any little green wires on my mobo either... so I'd say those pictures were pre-production.

I fired up the Myst IV demo to see how well the integrated card could handle non-3D graphic intensive applications. It works flawlessly in Myst IV with everything to the max. I know this isnt really a "benchmark"... but it does prove that the intel 915 graphics are good enough for "everything else".
 
well my temps are pretty good, I ran Prime 95 for 20 hours and then rebooted and checked the CPU temp in the BIOS and it was only 49

however, I cannot get it to recognize anything plugged into the PS/2 ports and when I try to install the chipset drivers, my mouse and keyboard stop responding until I restart

also, the PCI slot and PCI-E slot being on the wrong side is a very bad idea, IMO

my Hauppauge PVR-250 won't even fit without the tuner part touching the PSU, and that can't be good for cooling

and the way it's setup, the video card will be sucking in hot air from the PSU


I'm thinking about sending it back and getting a SB75G2, which means I would have to give up the extra hard drive and the media card reader

Good free temp monitoring software = Speedfan (google it)
Speedfan has worked on anything I've ever used it on, including my Shuttle (SB51G)
 
Well, I downloaded SpeedFan as suggested.... upon opening the program the fan speeds for all 3 fans go to 100%.... you can then adjust them lower manually on the first screen... but then when you close out of the program it just stays wherever you last left the fans... this is real annoying... all I wanted it to do was monitor the temperature, etc... not CONTROL anything... Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong? Seems like a great program otherwise.

i've been looking at my cousin's new Antec ARIA, and i'm really freaking liking the damn thing... and it'll host 3 hard drives (which is a requirement for me... hm...

no, I gave up, got newegg to let me exchange it for a SB75G2 - will have to deal with only 2 hard drives for now

that Antec Aria looks sweet - 3 hard drives and 3 PCI slots :eek:

Can anyone tell me how important it is to match the compatible memory listed on the Shuttle SB81P site with what you actually put in the machine.
Shuttle has listed them using their manufacturer and Chipset but I am having difficulty working out what memory MODEL NUMBERS will be compatible.
My SB81P willl be arriving in 3 days (read very excited) and I have got all my other componants except RAM. I am intending to use 512Mb at the moment and the only compatible Dual Channel RAM I could confidently say would work is "Kingston Model number KVR400X64C3AK2-512"
Down here in Australia the main memory brands available in most of the stores & online stores are:
Kingston
Corsair
Geil
Kingmax

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I would just go with some Corsair. Get some PC3200 and you should be fine.
