Official PS5 Thread

Nice! Any issues with it sideways? Such as more noise or anything? Mine is hopefully coming after thanksgiving so needing to figure out placement until then.
As far as issues, the base isn't exactly secure. If you place it vertical, the base screws in. If horizontal, there's no place for the screw, and it just connects. So it will shift a lot.

And, as I mentioned earlier, it is the noisiest of the consoles I have. The Xbox and Switch are quiet. With the PS5, I do hear the fan. It's not loud by any means, but it's there.

I'm still waiting on my PS5, but my PS4 Pro was loud as hell with certain games. God of War, TLoU2, Uncharted 4, basically anything that pushed the system a little would sound like a PC running a stability test.

Steam just added official support for the PS5 controllers via a beta update. Just the basic functionality for now. I don't have massive expectations, but it would be neat if cross-platform games could get haptic and controller audio support on the PC as well. Never happened on for the DS4, but I can hope.
Man it would be so simple for Sony to put out a driver which enables the advanced features. And then PC ports could carry over those features to PC players. And Sony would sell a lot of Dual Sense controllers.

Nah, makes to much sense....!

I never really had that problem with my PS4 Pro, though I hear a lot of people complain about the noise. Perhaps my fan is just dead. But the system has worked fine since I got it.

What's funny is that with that wireless dongle they released for the Dualshock 4, all of its fancy features were supported. Controller audio, the touchpad, etc. No games actually used any of it, though. The only real use for it is/was for the PS Remote App since actual PS4 games take advantage of those things. You can make Steam treat the touchpad like a button and you can use the controller audio to play normal audio (it sounds as bad as you'd expect), but that's kinda it.
Maybe times will change and they'll go a different route this time, though. It would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath. Steam did way more to legitimize the PS4 controller for the PC than Sony or any devs.

I think it's a crapshoot to some degree. My launch Xbox 360 was whisper quiet while I've known people with incredibly loud systems bought the same day.

Haven't had a PS4 Pro myself, but I was under the assumption that the updated version (the one bundled with RDR2 and with the 'standard two prong' AC code) was a lot quieter compared to the original PS4 Pro.

Not trying to make excuses for anything but are we still well within "typical x amount of lemons/broken machines show up in a much larger batch" like happens with just about everything? Do we have a gauge on the scope of this yet?

I'm curious as well. usually it's the vocal minority, and that's every console release.

The PS3 and the "Yellow light of death" was only .5% of consoles, but I feel like that was everywhere on the internet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Statistics_regarding_reliability
PS4 was .4% https://linustechtips.com/topic/79145-ps4-failure-rate/

After the dust settles, I'm sure the failure rate will be lower than it appears.

I never had an Xbox Red Ring, but I did have a PS3 Yellow Light. Sony made it right FAST. I talked to them on the phone for maybe 10 minutes. After they made certain it wasn't a bluff, they next-day shipped me a new unit with return labels. I had the BC model and they even asked if I wanted another one like that or the newer model. Basically the entire thing was resolved in 48 hours. If that's still how they do business, no big deal.

I'm still waiting on my PS5, but
Mine just arrived*. Going up in F/S at $1200 ea - Paypal F&F ONLY

A lot of people are confusing the coil whine present in many PS5’s as fan noise. I initially thought it was the fan in my PS5 making noise then later realized the frequency changes depending what was on the screen. The coil whine on the PS5 is very low pitch compared to the coil whine you normally hear from most PC components:

You can’t select anything like that at all, that’s just what’s available via your hdmi cable/tv

im wondering if it’s just the PS5 dashboard that’s stuck to 60hz and when you launch a compatible game like Dirt 5 or whatever it automatically jumps to 120hz???
You may have already figured this out or read about it, but there seems to be a new 4K Video Format option:
-1 seems to YUV422
-2 seems to be YUV420

I dunno if forcing those actually forces 120Hz in the dashboard, though.

It doesn't unfortunately. But it's all good. As the games work as they should at 120hz

Had my first PS5 crash. I had been playing Demons Souls in the afternoon, put the console into Rest Mode (even after reading about the Rest Mode issues), and went about my day. This evening I returned to play more Demons Souls, pressed the PS button on the controller, and... nothing. Then I noticed the PS5 light was no longer glowing yellow (as it does in rest mode). I just pressed the power button on the console and she started booting.

During boot, a message was briefly shown indicating something about an automatic repair, the console then rebooted and...seemed to work normally the rest of the night.

Shit like this is bound to happen, don’t worry about it 👍🏻

at least you don’t have a brand new, $1400x awesome tv that Sony potentially bricked for all of us with the hdmi 2.1 firmware update 😂😂😂

( too much to explain, just google Sony x900h problems after latest update )

I’m glad I didn’t sidegrade from my 900F.

If they bricked a lot of TVs it’s likely they’ll make it right fast though especially with this console launch.

Our Walmart got in 6 of them 2 in each box the boxes are huge but I didn't pick one up.
Some Mgr. said we were't suppose to get them in even. I didn't buy one but I like how the games are 69.00 a piece Dark Souls either wasn't in stock or sold out. I mean if most of the PS5 games are going to be on the PC it's hardly worth it.
Backlog says Hi to me anyway from like the SNES days.

No one has said that most Sony exclusives will be going to pc. God one game goes to pc and suddenly they believe everything will. Demon soul is a system seller. I don't expect it to even come to pc. Even if it does I am not waiting 3 years+ for it.

Is anyone able to confirm that the PS5 can play UHD Blu-rays with HDR10 and that it can pass Dolby Atmos from its Blu-ray player?

Atmos is a definite "no." Atmos content plays as Dolby HD instead. HDR10 seems to work, though. I kinda figured this was coming when they repeatedly never showed Atmos output in their FAQ videos.

I guess that means I can’t move my Xbox One X then. It’s basically just a Blu-ray player for me. Kind of disappointing but not unexpected.

I wonder if Sony could perhaps Atmos support in the future or if they even would. I couldn’t get a PS5 but managed to get 2 3080s. Go figure. I’ll either keep the Xbox out here or just buy a standalone player so I can move it.

Sony didn't pay for the Atmos license for some reason. I do t expect them to add it later cause they would have to write a huge check to Dolby or who owns the rights to it for all the systems they shipped.

At this point I kinda doubt they will, BUT there's a slim chance. They made a big deal about their special 3D Audio having better positioning and than Atmos. Trick is, with their current audio output there's no way to output height channels. They'll need to add some type of other audio output at some point or they'll finally just have to admit the whole thing was a sham to sell headphones. If they do add their own proprietary audio, it should be able to at least emulate what Atmos does. Right now there's a lot up in the air with all of that, though.
There's no HBO Max app yet, either. In fact, the streaming app selection is more sparse than on the Xbox and (especially) Amazon and Roku devices. I suspect they'll add it (and some other apps) eventually, but the PS5 isn't a great replacement for anyone's Firestick either.

It seems it can send Atmos bitstream over ARC / eARC but it will not decode it. Your receiver / soundbar will have to do that. I have a Sonos Arc and it at least claims Atmos is being received :) This is from watching Thor: Ragnarok on UHD Blu-Ray. Connected to an LG C9 outputting over eARC.

Ultimate FAQ also says under Additional Information - "Dolby ATMOS and DTS:X available for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc video (when connected to a supported device)"

I skimmed through that FAQ and either missed that part or they added that to it after I had skimmed it.

I’ll have to figure out the settings for the audio output from the PS5 but my soundbar can decode Atmos on its own. I have a Samsung Q90R soundbar.

Thanks for this. As soon as I can get a PS5 I’ll be moving the Xbox to a bedroom. I use an Apple TV 4K for all my other media streaming.

Yeah, I think they added the Atmos line after the fact. Don't think it was there originally.

It definitely doesn't seem to work running through a normal AV Receiver. I tried 3 different disks and my AVR is claiming that it's DolbyHD audio being received from all 3.

I believe that it might send it as Dolby TrueHD or something similar. The Apple TV does MAT. Maybe it can only do it via bitstream. I don’t have a PS5 yet so I can’t really test it out. I don’t anticipate being able to get a PS5 for a few months either.

Once yet again: I thank you and a number of others on here for reminding me why I have been on this forum as long as I have.
Good luck, Sony changed the website as of today to force the queue (or at least it's far more "strict" now, I have not found a way to get around the queue like the esc key trick.) The chance of getting one from PS Direct is even slimmer now.

I had PS5 in my Walmart cart twice and made to as far as place order only for it to error out then they be sold out.

I’m not fighting to get a console. If Sony wants to sell me one they’ll make enough for everyone who wants one. I’ll get one when they are easy to get.

I'm not touching it. They said touching it does nothing. I have it open while I'm doing other things. Zero expectations.

I think a number of these companies need to get their act together because this has been going on long before COVID. Covid just made it worse. I understand people see an opportunity and take it with bots and flipping stuff... I get that... but I still think it's crap.

A follow up.
I noticed in those screenshots that it’s sending Atmos via TrueHD. I know my soundbar accepts Atmos via TrueHD (I think that’s the preferred method). Perhaps you’ve got a setting amiss somewhere.

This may seem like a dumb question but does your receiver actually support Atmos and do you have the proper setup for it?

I’m not trying to play on your intelligence or offend you at all but I do realize that lots of console owners aren’t necessarily tech nerds. Since we all don’t know each other I reckon it’s a fair question.
