Well, what an exciting time for all you PC enthusiasts out there, with the advent of X99 and related technologies such as DDR4. Not wanting to take things overboard - why don't we have a simple discussion on a hypothetical "MEGA" server build involving what you think would be crazy enough to actually be reasonably justified, but no real budget. Let's also assume single processor, at least for now.... Let's just see where this takes us, shall we my friends?

Here's my initial thoughts, please do chime in...

cpu: intel xeon E5-2697 V3
mb: asus x99-E WS
dram: samsung 4 x 64 GB 3D TSV DDR4-2133
hd: samsung XP941 512GB PCIe x4 M.2 NGFF SSD
case: lian-li PC-V1000L (black of course)
disk array: just stick in whatever drives you have laying around because at this point you're probably broke

remember, this is not a gaming build, or one for overclocking, but more for 24/7/365 uptime and core performance.

If you're concerned about 24/7/365 uptime, you should be looking for server-class motherboards and ECC RAM. It looks like that board is workstation class, and I haven't found anything with a quick Google search that says that is ECC RAM. Granted, workstation-class stuff *should* be better than average desktop-class, and *should* support ECC RAM, I still would hold out for a server board. However, I believe most of the time server boards do not share the same chipsets with desktop boards. I think the C222/224/226 is it for Haswell server chipsets, correct?

ETA: That setup would probably make a very badass CAD workstation. I think I spied 8 RAM slots, so you should be able to go more than 64Gb, if your wallet can handle it. :)

You're right iroc409, maybe a server board would fit better, i wonder when they will be released? on the ram, i was actually referring to the (4 x 64 gb) modules, that actually haven't been released yet, but they are supposed to be in full production whatever that means...

thanks for your reponse!
