Official ID Software RAGE thread

Well I just bought this game and I'm enjoying it so far, though ID should have made this a true PC game, not some shitty console port which is common these days, face it, gaming developers have abandoned the PC community and I'm shocked to see ID has sucked up to consoles too.

Anyway, I suppose this game does not support multi GPU setups right? One of my GPU's aren't even running and this game is capped at 60 FPS, can't even find a Vsync option in the graphics options.

Finally figured out how to get my friends game past a loading screen that constantly freezes. We played for a few hours and basically here is what I think of the actual game and not its technical bugs.

The textures when you are riding around in your buggy look pretty awesome. But the static sky is a let down. When your on foot the textures are a mix of nice to what the fuck? There are moments when you become nearly impressed with how the game looks overall then you go to pick up an item and you notice it looks like a blob of textures. We did the proper config where you get the 8k textures and they do sharpen things up but overall Metro 2033 has better looking textures. In fact Gears of War 3 has better looking textures ... which is just weird but also sad consider Rage's lead platform was the 360.

The game play is very much a vapid Fallout 3 on rails. The characters have personality but its like they just have "enough" , they don't feel like fleshed out NPC's like they did in Fallout. You don't ever feel attached to them or give a shit if something happens to them at all. The story line is also completely forgettable and while I was expecting that considering its from Id , I do admit I had hoped they would actually attempt something more involving but no.

Overall if you remove the technical bullshit and the fact that its an insult to PC gamers considering its a port from the developers that created the FPS genre , its not worth $60 at all. If you do all the side missions its probably around 20+ hours but the missions get so boring and you feel like a lap dog for everyone. You never get encouraged to explore at all .. just go to point B then return to point A.

I will say if you simply must play this game , rent the 360 version. Its bug free , looks pretty damn good considering its a 360 game and you won't have dumped $60 on something you won't be playing a month from now and I know this is the last of Rage I'll be playing.

If you put aside the fact the game is a complete train wreck for just a minute, I have to say the whole mega textures + a fairly decent amount of unique geometry really leaves an impression on me.

It's not that the game looks amazing or next gen per say, but the overall feel of the game is this hint of eerie realism, it's something I've never really felt before, I think the closest game I've seen to this is SWAT4 which has a crap load of unique textures/meshes crammed into small area. It really speaks to the atmosphere and believability of the world almost irrelevant of the actual quality of the graphics.

It's one of those things you can't really see 2nd hand, you have to check it out for yourself. If/when the problems get sorted I can see myself buying this just to see how far they can push that same theme.

So far I've had a very good experience with the game. I went in expecting the worst and bracing myself. ;)

I'm still using 280.26 drivers on a single GTX 480 for now but thanks to the tweaks that have been posted numerous times around here and probably a lot of luck, I had a fun 2 hour session last night and I personally think the game looks and runs pretty damned good. No issues whatsoever.

I even LOOKED for texture pop in problems and I had one that I thought almost happened for about half a second.

Then I just started enjoying the damned game.

Is it Metro 2033 graphics and textures? Hell no.

But it comes together well enough and I like it taken as a whole. There are some instances in the game where I've stopped and taken in my surroundings because I was impressed with what I was seeing taken as a whole.

Yes, if you get close to things you can see where the textures were short cutted. There's no tweak that's going to change that.

It's a more serious and darker Borderlands for the most part if I had to give a broad stroke impression to someone. For me, that's good news because I love Borderlands.

This is a meat and potatoes FPS that doesn't reinvent the wheel and doesn't try to which is probably where some of the disappointment begins for a lot of people.

If I don't have any problems and continue to enjoy myself I'll book this as a solid 8/10 title for myself. Obviously a whole lot of people's MMV.

I'm having an issue with the game not related to graphics..

It seems to be fine when I just follow the mission structure exactly.. but if I do something off the beaten path.. (like try to go back into the bandit hideout from the first mission) the game crashes for me.

It happened 3 times in a row doing the same thing.. so it seems awfully specific to be a random problem..

It happened again when I zoned into another location that wasn't part of my current mission..

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Does this game ever graduate from the formula of, "go here, do this, come back"? Where or what is the story? Recently being immersed within Deus Ex:HR has my senses spoiled I guess because thus far (3 hours in) I'm almost forcing myself to keep playing or caring for the world of RAGE.

Story? In an id game?

I was a little too harsh earlier, the game is growing on me (took about 4 hours). Once all of the tweaks are set for the game, textures are corrected in a patch, price drops a bit, and they add some proper video options + a zoom toggle I'm sure people will spend more time enjoying the game and less time whining.

This game would be better in a year with texture packs released, all bugs etc fixed give us proper video settings etc.

Agreed. Rage was rushed! ;)

Damn developers really needed 7 years instead of 6 to make this game perfect. :D

Thanks snoozin, I've been looking for those. BTW, what did you click on their site to access that?

With a few tweaks and the new drivers, it's smooth like butter and everything is spot on. It's not mind-blowing graphics but that's not the point. It's a plus when the graphics are amazing but I'm looking for a game to play, not to stare at.

I have to ask, has ANYONE found the soundtrack to the game? I ask because I still LOVE the intro song.

The racing keyboard setup makes things hard as hell, especially when weapons are involved... :( Edge of the seat type stuff, for sure.

I've gotta figure how to use the ps3 pad on my computer. I know I have a bluetooth adapter around here, somewhere.

Wow, after reading everything on these forums I was expected RAGE to suck monkey balls, but so far, it's been quite fun. Not nearly as good as Deux Ex HR (the last game I played), but still a fun, (comparatively) mindless, and visceral shooter. Would have much rather spent $20 for it on a Steam sale, but oh well, nothing I can do about that now except learn from that mistake in the future.

As for the graphics, I actually think they're pretty good as long as you don't zoom in too closely. The megatextures give everything a unique look, which really highlights how repetitive traditional texturing has become in video games. If id can get the up-close textures looking better (they said they're might be a texture pack coming), then I would say this game could look truly great.

Yeah I've noticed that as well. It's hard to put stock in professional reviews and now forum opinions -- just play the game yourself and form your own review (how it should be).

Reading some of the posts surrounding RAGE just makes me feel sorry for a lot of people. It seems as if they just have so much personally invested in pc games that when something doesn't live up to their expectations, they really lash out, get bent out of shape hoping to shit all over everyone elses time to make them as miserable as they feel. It's really ugly to see the group think that unfolds.

Rage starts slow but builds up nicely. The engine has a lot of potential and it's one of the most fluid in motion I've ever seen. Good solid game experience - just wish I hadn't played Deus Ex:HR prior to it as well, haha.

This patch made great work on my system.
I installed the patch and deleted the rageconfig.cfg

Intel i7 2600 (4 cores - 8 threads)
2x NVIDIA GTX580 in SLI
8GB RAM
latest 285.38 driver

If I change the driver profile to allow the game to set the vsync and than I set the Smart vsync in game,
tearing disappeared. +1 for the patch

They talks about SLI in the changelog but the latest nvidia driver have the SLI option disabled, if I enable it manually
the framerate drops drammatically. Weird eh?

I noticed that to get a SHARP image I need to use an antialias of 4X or lower. Every antialias greater than 4X creates blurry graphics.
With anitialias to 4X graphics is much better than before, there is some crappy texture but graphics is much better than before using 16X AA.

Something is moving and I'm happy for this new improvements.
I hope to see a driver that will let me enable the SLI and using 16X AA without loosing the sharp images as it happen now.

I'm impatient to enjoy this game, I want to start the game when all problems will be solved and I can't wait for it :)

Been playing the game and so far, enjoying every minute of it. I dont see what the fuss was about during release. Yes, graphics are bad but ehh what can you do?!

I'm enjoying the game now... after getting past the slightly disappointing texture resolutions... has a very arcade feeling to it.

of course I'm in a good mood right now... when I'm all grumpy I tend to not like games like this... so it's not the best mood lifter-type thing to play, but it's mindless fun nonetheless. for me...

All that being said, I really wished it was much better and id rocked the world with their awesomeness, but I stopped expecting that kinda reaction after indications they were slipping after quake 2

if you are on nvidia keep the antialias below 4x and the graphics will be really sharper.

LOL like this?

Kingpin life of crime for pc circa 1999. Can you fucking believe that this games textures look actually a tad better than Rage circa 2011? Actually I think Kingpin has equal or better textures and more lighting lmao. But less geometry.

You're obviously blinded by how ripped off you feel because that SS looks absolutely terrible in comparison to RAGE.

I actually see alot of similarities, of course Rage has more geometry being 2011...

Not seeing it at all. Everything about that SS looks outdated. You at least have to do a little searching to find bad textures in RAGE. Every single texture, model, light, etc looks very low quality in that SS you posed.

Trying to compare a 1999 game? It doesn't work, sorry. We all know you are butthurt about how you think you wasted your money on RAGE, but there comes a point at which everything that you post on the matter just looks childish and ridiculous. You passed that point a long time ago.

Rage doesn't make me lose my belief that PC gaming is still the best form of gaming. Id not being what it use to be doesn't either. When a game releases with the kind of hype Id surrounded it and it gets released in its broken and sad state then we all have a right to bitch about it. If you dumped money into a product then airing your disappointment or frustrating is natural.

If someone has suddenly lost there faith in PC gaming because of Rage than that's a sad reason to have that happen and frankly an overreaction.

Stripping out all the issues Rage has .. its a mediocre game and not even close to being worth $60 dollars. If Id ever expects the PC gaming community to move on from this fuck up then they will have to actually listen to what fans want and not release a crappy port next time. Even then I'm sure this has soured a lot of gamers towards ever dumping $60 on an Id game anytime in the near future.

So does the patch effectively allow us to use the 8k textures?

You still need the rageconfig.cfg file.

I also noticed that things get worse if you put AA from 8 to 16 from the in game menu in terms of pop ins and texture issues. Someone had said somewhere a day or two ago that AA at 16 could be broken. They might be right.

I don't believe you still need it. I changed the file name. entered the game, set everything to high and put the command "vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly" into the console and it came up with the 8k texture size.
