Official ID Software RAGE thread

This day brings me back to 2004, when ID released Doom 3 and Valve Half Life 2. Obviously HL2 was the better game at the time, and look now ID drops a shit game, while Valve drops a DLC that well, will hopefullly not fail - downloading now.

So is this game really bad in game play, or just very bad in graphic drivers and bugs?

The game seems good (not great), but right now all ati users are waiting on new drivers to make the game playable.

this is by far most intese game from id yet... im happy thy took their time to complete the game and not 1/2 assing it like ea

"You'd think that a graphically demanding shooter from id Software -- of all studios -- would be at its peak on PC, but according to a growing number of users, RAGE is a broken mess. Users around the 'net (including NeoGAF) are complaining of intense screen-tearing, poor texture loading, and glitches.

In particular, those users with ATI GPUs are shouldering the bulk of the problems, but nVidia customers have had their fair share of issues. Whatever your card of choice, it seems likely you'll face some big problems.

id Software's John Carmack attempted early damage control last night, warning fans on Twitter: "Everyone, make sure you have latest Nvidia/Ati drivers to play Rage!" Needless to say, plenty of gamers have the latest drivers and aren't noting much improvement.

I understand computers are complex and varied beasts, but it's sad to see games allegedly designed with PC in mind wind up inferior to their console alternatives (Edit: Apparently it wasn't. Okay then). I'm currently downloading the PC version of RAGE and will share my own experiences with it once I've gotten some time with the thing."

My copy from Amazon is sitting right here. It's staying sealed. I have 30 days to return it. That's the maximum amount of time I'm waiting to either see things get fixed or boot this thing out of here.

I commend you for resisting the temptation to tear open every new package you receive. I struggle at times to do so. :p

I expect the driver updates and further adjustments made by Bethesda (from their twitter) are showing good news. Furthermore, the cfg changes are exactly what I was looking for. Classic id cfg adjustments.

Amazon still hasn't shipped my copy. Which I ordered a month ago. This isn't the first time they've fucked up release date delivery, though, so even more credit goes into my account while I wait for them to finally ship the broken game, so I can wait for it to be fixed.

If you can, just cancel. Save yourself headache. Consider yourself lucky also.

Agreed, cancel and you can order later, most likely at a cheaper price and a few patches/driver updates will help as well.

I'm seriously considering it, though I doubt the game will be much cheaper anytime soon. I'm also waiting to see if they fail to ship it yet again--starting to look that way. Which means another call to the customer service and get another $10 apology credit.

I had an existing $20 off going in. Then the $10 pre-order bonus. So I figured $30 all said and done, I can deal with that. This morning's phone call got me a $10 "we're sorry" credit and an additional $7 because this has happened with release date games before ("I might as well just cancel my prime account now." "No, sir ,don't do that, we'll refund a month of Prime!"). Which means Rage is costing me $13 at the moment.

One more missed day and maybe I can get paid $4 to get the game.

can't wait to play this wonderful title, serious sites give this game a 9 or a 9.5 scores, all bashing here is unuseful.

Just installed the new drivers, i now have constant 55->60fps and texture pop is extremely improved. In large outside areas it is still noticeable on the extreme outsides of the screen. Inside i had to spin the camera 360 quickly to see it.

Expect pc users (whereas most reviews are using the console versions) have major problem with slow loading textures, framerate problems, flickering textures, artifacting, etc.

Wouldn't mind picking this up but no way is this game worth $60. I pre-ordered Deus Ex for $27, Witcher 2 for $37, Dragon Age 2 for $38, and Dead Island for $34 all from reputable sites.

Never seen an ID Software title that haven't received a patch to fix all the problems so I don't see where is the problem.
I don't have any hurry to play it and I'm sure that all problems will be fixed soon.

Most of the problems has been just solved with the latest driver from ati and with the latest profile from nvidia.

Need some help..

When I am playing there are times where I cannot stop moving unless I jump. Directly after that, I cannot move at all unless I jump again.

Does anyone know a fix for this as it is completely unplayable for me right now.

Update: Also when I am stuck and can't move, I can't access my settings or anything.

Update 2: Does not play nice with Mouse Without Borders.

By serious sites, presumably you mean ones that review games to make a living and are prone to the buckle under the pressures of unhappy publishers? The sites who have the most reason to be bias? Those sites?

Gamers are going to tear apart the game or not based on the actual quality of the game and their experience with it, the absolute bitch slapping the community is giving rage right now is well deserved since its PC release is a total embarrassment.

Of course sites are going to give it a 9.0+, half of them probably have advertising deals with id and want to keep the cash flowing, they don't care if their review is accurate or not, they can spin it either way like any good media company can do with ease.

We've seen what happens when reviewers step out of line *cough*gamespot*cough*

With how I fixed things up, at least 90% of all the pop ins are gone and now I can play it and it is now MUCH more enjoyable.

There are not that many PC reviews out yet. Especially from "serious sites".

It seems you are wrong.

I sat and watched my friend play it for 3 hours last night on PS3 and going from what I've seen of the game alone, all issues for PC aside, I will never buy the game. It reminds me of a mix between Fallout 3 without the truely open world gameplay, multiple story lines and in depth NPC relationships, Dead Space without the character/weapon customization and creepy variety of enemies & Red Faction: Geurilla without the physics and destructible environments.

In short, nothing about the game seemed new or worth playing if you've played the 3 aformentioned games. I will likely never play the game as it just seems way too much like games I've already played with nothing new to make me think otherwise.

I appreciate the honest feedback and posts like this are helpful to me in deciding to purchase now or later... this is on my DukeNukemForever list aka purchase when it's 2.50 on Steam.

If you want a game that looks fantastic ( possibly better than RAGE ) with better weapons and realism I suggest loading up Fallout 3 along with the HD texture packs and sound packs, the Immersive Health-Injury System mod and the sniper aim corrected mod.

Fallout 3 loaded to the hilt with the latest HD texture/sound, weapon realism and companion mod's is a sight to behold but if you grab all the HD texture mods you better have a fast CPU and 1gb+ vram on a good GPU like an HD 4870 or better.

Playing Fallout 3 with the new mod's is possibly the best bet for anyone that is going to hold off on RAGE as you'll probably end up with a far more enjoyable experience in the long run from what I've seen so far.

so 2 AMD RAGE drivers but not a peep from Nvidia regarding any new drivers???

I'm about 2 hours in and finding it hard to care enough to push through to the end. It's difficult to describe but the game just feels hollow and lifeless. Not impressed with the megatexture tech as everything just looks so fake up close, nothing moves, very little interactivity, and the textures are muddy despite all of the "fixes" in using a rageconfig.cfg, cache file location, and command line tweaks. Also, there are way too many invisible fences...suddenly I can't jump over a sandbag or a tiny rock? The sky looks nice in photos but not in motion (because it doesn't move). The repetition in enemy voices and even the main NPCs, the weird feeling controls, no zoom toggle, lack of pc centric features -- how in the world did this game get rated so highly?

Well after finding a good config, and the new AMD rage drivers its accually not a bad game at all.

But I agree with Kyle on how some of the textures look fucking stupid. How can you have pipes that look like a picture on the wall. Its not even that, with max textures I still see shitty fridges/sandbags/tool chests that look like crap. I Thought they looked better in Fallout 3.

But thats not to take away how well the game looks....its just seems like ID took alot of shortcuts to get the game done, and Basically said FU to the PC user base with no in-game options.

overall its a decent game, but ID should be ashamed of themselves for releasing the game in this horrible crappy state. It took the community to Fix ID's fuck up.

my .02c
