I'd imagine it to be pretty popular around; but for those who don't know, DotA stands for Defense Of The Ancients. It's a custom map for Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne that will eat away many many hours of your social life if you get into it. I wanted to make a little thread for people to discuss the game and share some of their tips, favorite heroes, etc. If you have WC3, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

http://www.dota-allstars.com/

Oh, and some Swedish group called Basshunter made a song about DotA which turned into a number one single in Europe. It's pretty sick too.

D0ta has its merits, one of them definetly is NOT its community, which will burn you out fairly fast

one of my biggest pet peeves with the game is that just about everyone in pub games expect everyone to know exactly what to do, perfect builds, perfect reactions, read their minds etc. this burnt me out and as i was tired of everyone and their mother going down on one guy, just because it was his first.

the game has alot of good merits, but sadly the game is very badly designed with the later half of the game in mind, after alot of the main characters that own in early game loose their effective dmg, they become great support heroes, but there are just some who don't even have that ability and just become a target. Another thing is stun lock, they need to work on maximum stuns per second, much like the maelstrom proc. The three dominating characters in the game is Slardar, Mangina, and Darkterror, inherant bash, blink like abilities (Slardar's sprint in this case), paired up with two bashers will dominate anyone who has more dmg, evasion, armor, what ever. Thats just with two level 2 items, pair it up with a hand of midas(level1), treads(level1) and you'll have enough attack speed to make it worth it

the games good, just not outstandishly awsome, its nice that ice frog (old map developer for blizzard north) decided to take on a mod project to this degree and keep it up to date, even on an outdated platform. I think i'd reinstall WC3 and get dota if he fixed the bash situation

DotA is a game that can be picked up after maybe a week of play, but takes a long time to master. There are 2 sides, Sentinel and Scourge. Each side has a large computer controlled base in opposite corners of the map. Deep within the base, is an ancient they are protecting, Tree of Life or Frozen Throne. The goal is to protect your ancient and destroy the enemy's.

The teams are 5 vs 5 and require a lot of teamwork. One bad player could drag the whole team down easy. Each of the 5 players selects one hero whom they control for the entire game. There are 40 heroes, each with very unique abilities and stats. The game remains very balanced despite the diversity. Any hero can dominate in the right hands, and the more powerful heroes take more skill to play as.

There are 3 main lanes connecting the bases that are heavily fortified with guard towers on each side. The cpu controlled bases send waves of low level attackers, called creeps, at the other base. They're mostly melee units with the occasional spell caster or catapult.

Your hero starts at level 1. Early on, a guard tower or wave of creeps will kill you pretty easily, so you have to be cautious and level up. You can max out at level 25, each level you also upgrade your abilities in addition to becoming more powerful. At level 6, you get your first Ult ability which varies a lot but it is very powerful. It can be everything from simply dealing a lot of damage to freezing an enemy player for several seconds.

Ranged attackers tend to level up easier cuz they can just pick off enemy creeps while theyre tied up with each other. Melee attackers are more difficult. Usually, they wait till an enemy is weak and killshot him. You don't have to get kills to level up, you can also level slower by standing near a player getting killed. This is called leeching xp which the less skilled players usually do.

You gradually gain gold as the game goes on and get bonus gold for kills. Taking down a tower or Hero gets huge gold. You can use it to buy items like armor or swords. There are also 4 levels of recipes which combine 2 or 3 items into one more powerful item. You should build your hero to his strengths: agility, intelligence, or strength.

If you die, your team lose gold and the other team gets it. There is a respawn timer that depends on your level. Deaths can hurt the team pretty bad, especially early on. If a couple players leave and its 5v3, the game is still balanced cuz the 3 players get additional gold and can build more powerful items with it.

Movespeed is very important in DotA. Both for chasing enemy heroes or escaping from enemy heroes while your low on hp. There are all kinds of abilities that slow the enemy down or give you a temporary burst. To heal, you go back to your base and stand near the fountain. You don't want to heal too often, because it wastes time when you could be leveling up.

Each round lasts around 30 to 90 minutes usually. Heroes aren't really strong enough to attack the enemy base until around lvl15 with some tier 3 items. The game is over once they destroy the enemy's ancient, which has a lot of hp and surrounding guard towers.

The latest map as of me writing this is 6.38b. The game is updated frequently to resolve any glitches, player complaints, balance issues, and to add more content. You can download the latest map here:

I always thought Enfos was so much better because you upgrade the towers and defenses also..

Might not be Enfos, but its the other DOTA like game..

I really like WC3 in general and most of the mods. DotA jis just the most polished and by far the most popular. And for good reason, it has a fun factor that keeps me coming back. Even 2 years later, I still find myself playing DotA a couple times a week over my X360. It's definately more fun if you have a couple friends to play with.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. There really are no dominating characters. It almost entirely depends on the player. Naix is in my opinion probably the strongest strength hero, but I just watched somebody go 0-10 with him. I always thought of Mangina as one of the weaker heroes even. In every game, there's usually a different hero that racks up a bunch of kills. The only hero who i think is a little overpowered right now is Abaddon, but updates tweak balance issues every couple of weeks.

Isn't DOTA similar to Tides of Blood? What are the main differences between?

Here's a screenie from my last game. Further proves my point that any hero can pwn.

Untitled-1.jpg

In game name is same as my username here, Blinkme323. Yes, that does say 13-2, three more kills then their whole team

This mod is the only reason I launch warcraft 3 every now and then..... I actually play the song while playing sometimes lol.

/shrug, i have a 20-2 game with kotl, someone whos not really a hero killer, but those are pub games, has no impact on a game with two teams that have alot of team support.

BS right now needs alot of work with his auto thirst, which to me is stupid, having it as a cast allowed the other character to have a chance, now theres zero chance especially if his ulti is up.

play any private or cal game, mangina, slar and darkterror are used in the top 3 teams, even icefrog admits to the bash problem and wants to find a way to fix it so its not increadibly broke/stupid in most games while not pissing off everyone who loves to do perma bash

Mangina is easily one of the strongest heros in the game, can't brag about his hp (until you get a linkens) but hes one of the fastest hitting heros, spells do jack shit to him, does extra dmg per hit with mana burn, and can blink and miss spells especially storm bolts

naix is an increadibly weak character, not exactly good at very much, except casters, his main lunch is zues which can easily own him if his avatar is down (naix very much depends on his avatar), spider vs him? lights out, not to mention rev can have him dead before you can run up to him.

dota is fun, but honestly it needs alot of item work, characters to me are fine, all of them are unique and fun, some have alot of trouble later (krob, kotl, etc.) but are still keys for early game domination and can be used as stackers later on.

I have to lawl at calling naix a weak character... for anyone that knows the game well at all, they know naix is the 1 hero who can solo the entire other team the easiest... Just let naix farm in the woods for a couple minutes and the game is over.

And yes, any hero can become overpowered by items... but I don't know why you used a picture of bloodseeker doing it to try to say that, as he is one of the stronger heroes in the game.

in any kind of private or "pro" game i have yet to see naix used, and for obvious reasons, he will get smacked around and will not gain levels or gold for the first 8 levels, he'll be behind the entire game and forced to do the slower leveling/farming tactic of staying in the forest, if the other team was smart they would use wards to watch rivers/farm spots and use gank tactics

naix is not a very effective character, i have yet to see him "solo" an entire team, especially a halfway decent team, so if you think naix is good then you must of thought spectre was good when she was first introduced (which was absolute crap).

edit: also, naix is the only character solely dependant on items, his abilities are fairly weak and the only thing effective on him is his slow poison

Rule of thumb about DoTA:

There is no rule of thumb.

Point being that anything can happen. The amount of variables involved determine that, not always the characters being played. That sounds confusing, but if you think about things like the other team being on a team speak or ventrillo server, their coordination will rape you alone (even with weak heros).

I've seen Naix take out an entire team, ive seen him lose 1v1 to a caster casting no spells. All depends on a LARGE amount of variables.

if you want to see a cool other game like dota you can try http://beam.to/vile

its called age of myths. makes a nice break from a dota game every now and then.

dota for life!

dota is like every other game, you may think your good at your local donut shop playing street fighter against your friends, but your nothing when it comes to high level competition.

you may be able to do well with any hero in a public game, but when it comes to CAL / IHL it wont be the same. The teams have to be completely thought out before the game begins and team work has to be top notch.

I dont play anymore, but im positive I could hang with anyone in here if you want to play.

edit - naix would get raped by viper in a high level game (the person could even use one hand).

I haven't played in a while either, but i definetly like the new viper from 5.84 (even though he was still a bad ass then, i like the newer one better)

the game is even more fun, especially when you do random and one team is made up of nothing but stun hero's, especially minotaur, and some how your team with one basher seems to win!

I highly disagree with those saying Bashing is a problem. Any good player will just pick a blademail, maybe 2, and watch the bashers kill themselves when they try to attack you.

The great thing about the game is that it's balanced for the most part. Everything has a counter and there are so many strats that are out there that this game is truly complex.

Very true.

There'sa a group of 5 or 6 people from [H] that play dota together. Started playing Dota together a few weeks ago after we had played WoW together for a while.

Yeah once you play this game enough you realize that no character is truly dominant. If you have one feeder go 0-5 on your team it can single handedly lose you the game under certain circumstances. Good players can adapt to pretty much any character, though obviously some matchups are doomed to failure as long as all players in the game are competent (which they usually aren't).

I could never get into allstars. I played too much RoC DotA by the time allstars became popular to make the switch. They're based on the same concept (same map actually) but they're completely different.

I never liked that in allstars, the hero killing is the primary objective and sieging is secondary. It always seemed to me that the items in allstars just made the game rather ridiculous later on down the line.

I'm not saying it's a bad custom map. Far from it. Otherwise it wouldn't have garnered the popularity it has, but at the same time, I prefer the more strategic game play and siege oriented version of RoC dota.

A few of us are playing right now on East server. If you ever run into a few guys with IMO after their name that's us.

DotA is great fun, I've been playing it off and on for probably close to 3 years now. There's nothing better than stomping on a bunch of pubs with a buddy or two. It's really funny, after a while of playing with the same person you can almost read their thoughts. Me and this other guy have been playing together for over 2 years and we never use voice chat or anything, but our teamwork is amazing. I love that aspect.

Just for the record, that DotA music video makes me sick. I think that something like that marks the beginning of the end of the world. I just can't explain it, there is something about it that strikes me as amazingly pathetic and rediculous.

No offense but styrg is a fantastic hero when used properly (a bit more so than most). Or at least back when I remember playing with him :p
Great game though :D

He's ridiculously imba now because thirst is passive. I went 21-2 with veno last weekend- in under 30 minutes.

6.39 should be coming out soon, I hear the range of Bloodseeker's thirst will be nerfed.

well if anyone ever wants people to play with on USEast server there are a few of us from the WoW [H] guild that play regularly.

We just recently started playing and we're not that good but we have fun on vent :p. Our names are listed below.

imo.WristCntrl (me)
imo.FreeKill
imo.AudibleSigh
imo.NigHunter

To whoever said that there most powerful people are slardar, mangina, and dark terror can be easily outdone with the centaur. Don't believe me, try having them attack him when he has 4 blademails and a heart. he sits there and reflects enough back to kill. (that and his thorns). Plus perma bash only works one on one. Like other have said you will not believe some of the game I have had.

Try KOTL, Warlock(who is fairly good), and enchantress vs Spider, Seeker, and Lina. Me and Enchantress were controlling Spider and Seeker with sheep sticks and our crowd control. We beat lina down( I would mana leak her) and she would be useless. Keeping people under control is the most important aspect in the game. You can have some of the most powerful people destroyed if you can control them.

Dota is very very very team based, if you want to argue that go fight against any team that has good communication. THey can put up a damn good fight with any combo of characters.

I trolled the shit out of battle.net and their forum, both of which are full of highschool idiots who get their feelings hurt online. Got banned twice from their forum.

http://banlist.nl/tools.php
(21 bans, search for tickle_me_emo)

favorite hero was chen, get 6 creep (3 w/ HoD) and the necro book, and a meckansm too, have 9 units to control and just push like crazy. I loved playing 2v5 games. The people on the 2 side are so cocky, I pick chen and win the game in 20 minutes (usually less than that). DotA people can't micro mulitple units, it's sad.

Good thing you brought up Warlock, forgot about him since he's fairly new. Right now, I'd say Warlock and Abaddon are the only characters on the verge of being imbalanced. His infernal is just way to good, especially with a refresher orb. Heroes like Enchantress and Stealth Assassin are a bit overpowered, but nothing unmanageable.

If you play the standard -APEM game, it is slightly biased to late game and image based heroes. Phantom Lancer can push just a little too good if you know how to micromanage. Of course every hero has a weakness. Dominating heroes early game with powerful nukes suck late game when people have more life, whereas the late game heroes require harder work early game to farm and deny.

That being said, DotA has some minor problems that bother me. .38b seems like its been out forever, can't wait for 6.39.

Eh, bloodseeker is really imba now, thirst needs to not last forever (maybe like 15-20 seconds) and needs a short cooldown or something.

Medusa, on the other hand, is ridiculously imba if you know what you're doing.
1.) Don't buy chain lightning- with mana shield 4 it takes more health from you than it does to any one enemy and you don't need more cc.
2.) Be patient- you have enough hp to run from anyone early, so do it.
If you go 2 wraiths, basilius, and treads, then mjo, its pretty much gg. I once ended a game with radiance, buriza, mjo, treads, bf, and aegis (which was pointless cause I never died). The only characters that can stop medusa are possibly anti-mage and nerub because of their mana burn.

Again, maybe bashing works against nub players, but it is not that effective against skilled players. The cost of 2 bashers and a hyperstone puts you up to what 9k gold. That's one or two Tier 4 items, even a Divine Rapier is only around 7k.

The bash does not stack, its % is diminished each time. In order to get "perma-bash", you need to use a hero like Slardar, Dark Terror, or Troll. Even then, this is only good 1vs1. Two heroes with tier 4 equipment will tear you apart.

A good team will recognize if the other team has a bunch of melee heroes, or bashers and prepare. Blademails are rarely used, but so effective in this case. Each one only cost 1800 gold and gives +5 armor and 20% damage return. Not only does this reduce damage done to you, but makes the enemy literally kill themselves. Every time they attack you, even while you are stunned, they are getting hurt.

In a recent -APEM game, the other team just stacked with all the bashing heroes and thought they'd pwn. It ended up being 2v5, because my team thought we would get raped and didn't want to waste their time. I stacked myself with a heart and 5 blademails. With a ton of damage reduction, high hp, and 100% damage return, the other team was useless and we won easily.

I am not saying bashing is not a good strategy in some cases; but like everything, it has a counter.

you guys need to stop playing pubs (and easy mode) and start playing better people (CAL or some clan matches or join the inhouse league)

bashers suck against good teamwork

lets see you permabash with the anti mage while your team gets reverse polarity/epicenter/chain frost/exorcism/carrion swarmed.

how's a basher going to help you then?

hell, lets see your anti mage farm vs a ranged hero (dp, clinkz, viper, lich, pugna all pwn anti mage early)

Anyone know how to counter terrorblade? Lategame hes unstoppable.
1v1 he's godly
since he has crap early game you should have harassed so his items aren't that good
5v5 he's average

mana burn
perma bash
image heroes

can all beat him

you can stun him before he gets low on health so he can't sunder

Lol I have 16. Search for RonaldTheLord. And I seriously have no idea why. Terrorblade should be constantly hexed and stunned when he's on low health to stop his sunder. Early harassment helps as well. And how do you join the inhouse league?
