Play Half Life and their mods in OpenGL NEVER DIRECT3D!!!! switch now!

i'd have to agree.OpenGL for sure with half-life. however, i have noticed a little bug that never got fixed for some reason. anyone on a higher end video card won't notice, but i'm sitting here with a 9000pro 64mb. and the only reason i noticed is because i wanted to have AA on full blast.

for some odd reason, if you set TRUFORM to 'application prefrence', the game slows down significantly (like i said higer end won't notice if it is there because you're slaughtering it anyway) but if you turn it to 'always off' then there's no problem. not visual difference as far as i could notice either way.

You be blind. Truform uses nPatches to significantly smooth the geometry on player models. If you have custom models on that card you'll never be able to play.

Yeah the 9000Pro don't have the horsepower for that, I'm stealing a 9700Pro atm and I still don't use truform for HL/CS/STEAM. make sure all the ATI switches are of fin your CS too. On stteam jsut type ati_ and look at the suggestions it gives, set all of them to 0 (zero/off)

Peace.

What is 'temporal AA' As you can see I am new to this. I have just installed a Sapphire 9600xt card and want o learn more about it.

Derek

if you read earlier in the thread i think they describe it, but basically, if the framerate is high enough (above 60fps), it effectively doubles the level of AA at no/negligible hit to your performance. i can't quite remember but it renders everyother frame with a higher level or something.

Liquid, you can't see Temporal AA in screenshots. It works by flashing 2 different images back and forth.

Shit I completely forgot these came out since I first heard they got released, I'll have to replace my previous Cat's when I get home from work tonight

No kidding, I as just going to say that actually. There is no way to show TAA in screenshots unless you DO have a number of pics for a number of frames....one after another. Sorry we had to burst your bubble dude, but you didnt have to post the pics.

The same thing happened to me, try reinstalling the monitor driver, that fixed the problem for me.

the 4.7's suck for me, my performance with UT2k4 got raped, along with other games. Im using the 4.2's now, everything is perfect :D

How are the new Catalyst? I still have the 4.6 (I've a 9800 Pro soon a new system with a 9800 XT), I want to know if these are bettere that 4.6. Thanks in advance.
I've downloaded also the omega drivers based on the 4.7 but still not installed.

Mauro, if you want an honest answer then here it is.......you'll have to try them out to be able to say for sure. There are so many people with similar (or even the same) video cards that will get often times completely different results out of a new Catalyst release. I'm really not one for System Restore (I hate the bloody thing) and I never go to the extent of making a disk image if I'm "scared" of a new driver.....I just go ahead and try it out. Run some game and/or synthetic benchmarks with your 4.6 drivers and then properly uninstall them and throw the 4.7's on to see how they do for YOU. If you're not satisfied it really doesnt take all that long to jump back to your old drivers, and at least then you can say you've tried them for yourself.

I'd love to be able to tell you "yes it's worth it" or "don't bother" but the truth is I can't. It's pretty funny how individualised the results seem to be, but that's the fun of it I guess. ;) :p

Let us know how they do.

Don't laugh, heh.

But should I run Ati card w/ Direct3D or OpenGl?

I've always ran my old Ti4200 w OpenGL,

This is my first ATi card btw. :D

Maybe I'm not paying attention here but..........run WHAT /w D3D or OGL??? You can't just run the CARD with a chosen API, and most games won't even give you an option and are coded for either or.

I'm not laughing or mocking you, I'm just trying to understand what you're saying here.

Nevermind, I totally was confused by a TAB in the settings, I'm all straight away now, Sorry :p

Heh, np.....and the "P" should be a "p" for the smiley. :p

hooray for the cat 4.7's but its been a month , wher the hell are the NEW drivers?

Finally upgraded from the 3.9s to the 4.7s last night and was having a helluva time doing it. After a couple hours, I finally realized I had to set Vsync to Application Preference instead of Always Off in Direct3D with ATI Control Panel or else the DX Diagnostic tests would run faster and the cubes would spin out of control. The only other settings I changed was setting TruForm to Application Preference. I only had time to test DXDiag and haven't tried any other benchmarks, games or playbacks. Is this a bug in the 4.7s or is this the case for all new ATI drivers?

Also, I noticed that ATI Control Panel has a lot less settings than Rage3DTweak. Should I just continue to use ATI Control Panel or is there something better? What are people's thoughts on this?

Well even though I've jumped ship and been a proud 6800GT owner for a couple weeks now I guess I can still field this question.

What specific functions are you speaking of? I have experience using Powerstrip, Rage3DTweak and other apps, but I never found anything practicle in any of them that made me switch 100% away from using the ATI Control Panel.....because for the most part it still contained all the functionality that a person really needs for their day to day gaming. If there does happen to be a feature or two present in a 3rd party app, I see nothing wrong with using it for that reason.....but I wouldn't consider it logical to completely switch over.....as I also found that it was often quite beneficial to use 3rd party apps in conjunction with the Control Panel.

As far as specific functions, I'll have to check when I get home. I just noticed the ATI Control Panel was fairly basic and Rage3DTweak had a lot more settings for D3D and OGL.....probably like 25+ different settings for each. I'd like to keep it simple, but want to make sure I'm not missing out on a function I might need.

You're not going to be missing out on anything you NEED by sticking with the Control Panel.....but there are those of us that are just that finicky and [H]ardcore that your everyday mipmap and AA settings simply aren't enough. ;)

Recap with us if you'd like about what the specific settings are you're talking about.....as they might be more/less important then you think.

So, does each catalyst driver have its own default settings and then when you install a tweak program it shows these defaults? Or does the tweak program have defaults and it changes the settings during installation?

I think I remember a "Mipmap" setting I had set to highest quality. I also remember settings related to bump mapping, hyperZ, hierarchicalZ and shaders. I'll have to check at home and see what settings I changed from default (at least what they were when I first opened Rage3DTweak; I wrote them down).
