*** Official Catalyst 4.7 Thread ***

Thx dude, i JUST refreshed the page and saw the link.....Oh goodie I said. those performance boosts in a few areas look promising.....as I've got an X800Pro on the way in the next month or two, as soon as i get my bloody tax return back. :p

I'll be sure to get to some testing and see how the 4.7's stack up against the 4.6's in my rig.

For some reason, this feature does not apper in the driver's control panel... probably a bug or a problem with the 9800 series of cards?

Temporal AA works on my 9800pro, and it looks mad nice!
but it enables Vsync, but do i care? nein!

downloading and installing now, won't do much good though since Im using a 9000 while I wait for 16 pipe cards to arrive in quantity

Damn, heh.

Modding the new Cat drivers to work on my FireGL is getting annoying now that they are coming out so regularly. :( :)

*sigh* I wonder how long before Thief 3 issue is fixed. I want to use the new v4.7 for some performance benefits but can't since Thief 3 is totally messed up with any Catalyst except for v4.4.

Downloading now. Anyone know what temoral AA does and what kind of performance increase we can get from it??

Is Temporal AA automatically enabled? Because I don't see an option for it in my Control Panel.

I have a 9000 Pro.

Maybe it doesnt work for those cards, I dont know i'm reading the release notes now.

Doesn't seem to appear @ all... ----> R360 - R360's PCB. probably an issue with this series... :(

My card's made by sapphire - it's 128 Mbytes of hynix 2.86ns chips, R360's pcb and ofcourse, R360 core. stock speeds, stock Bios (Rev. 008.017 - 3.30.2004).

The T.A.A feature's nowhere to be seen!!!

Tried to reinstall the drivers, doesn't seem to help...

my card is an R350 core, maybe it has some issue with R360?

"The feature provides higher Anti-Aliasing quality when an application frame rate is 60 frames per second or higher. This feature will be located within the ATI 3D tab and will be supported under both Windows XP and Windows 2000. "

Hmm well if no one sees it in their 3d tab I guess somethings wrong. And anyway most of the performance increases are for the X800 Series anyway. Maybe there is a problem with the R360 I'll try it in about a hour and post if it works.

Hey its better that they come out with them every month than having none at all! :)

I see it on mine, gonna play some call of duty and maybe some ut2k4 and let you know if i notice anything.

guess i didnt notice yet, maybe it wasnt in 4.6 but overdrive and temporal AA is avail on my x800 visiontek...

hmm, guess i wasnt really looking maybe lol

TAA was not in the 4.6 drivers, but is in 4.7. However it doesn't work with all cards so if you aren't seeing it then that means you don't have tools to do the work.

What 2xTAA does is 2x, 4x, or 6x AA (whichever you have set) as normal for every OTHER frame. For the remaining frames it uses a slightly different sample pattern. That way it is doing only 2x, 4x, or 6x work on each frame, but the visual effect, if you are getting high enough FPS, is that of 4x, 8x, or 12x AA respectively.

There is also 3xTAA, which does the same thing as 2x except it uses 3 patterns instead of 2 and thus with very high FPS you get the visual appearance of 6x, 12x, or 18x AA.

The nice thing with TAA is that there is no performance hit beyond the base 2x, 4x, or 6x that you are using so you can get upto 18x with the performance cost of 6x.

The bad things with it are...:
Your vsync is locked on.
It quits working whenever your below 60fps (I think 3xTAA may also have an even higher requirement).
If you are really sensitive to FPS issues you may see flickering from this, particularly when moving, and if you monitor wont take a high refresh rate at the resolution you are using then you may see these issues even if you aren't that sensitive.
Screenshots don't show it's effect at all (since each individual frame is only 2x, 4x, or 6x).
And finally, it's just plain hard to find a good game that you can run at high enough FPS to really use TAA effectively....

Its in the custom settings tab in the direct 3D tab.Maybe that will clear some of the problems up!

not a major change (+/- 1%) on this current setup. Just going to make me have to buy a x800 now ....

Temporal AA is very nice tho, i will say that.

Nice set of drivers. 4.6 was making my system all kinds of unhappy. 4.7 seems to of fixed something. Don't know that I'm noticing to much of a diffrince with the new TAA. Seems to be running smoother. But I don't have that high of a system anymore.

Just keep getting better.. IL2 Forgotten Battles perfect water mode is more playable . No tearing but fps in perfect mode is still too slow for my likeing.............................

Good job ATI ! Now if you will just get those x800xts out.......... :D

S~

well, i'm just finishing up getting my "before" numbers right now from a combination of tests (3DMark2001, 3DMark03, Aquamark3, Quake III, and CodeCreatures) and now I'm gonna get the 4.7's installed and get those "after" numbers taken care of, then I'll have more in depth results for my next post.

Alright, here we go with my own "before and after" look of the 4.7's.....comparing them to the previous 4.6 drivers. I'm only looking right NOW at a few synthetic tests.....as that's MOSTLY what I focus on with new releases......being the true benchmark whore that I am.

- all tests were run on my below sig system....with EVERYthing at stock

** 4.6 **
3DMark03: 6,459
3DMark2001: 16,806
Aquamark3: 43,906

** 4.7 **
3DMark03: 6,483
3DMark2001: 16,657
Aquamark3: 43,699

From my little bit of testing I can honestly say that I'll probly stick with the 4.6 Catalyst's for now. Going from 4.5 to 4.6 gave my DX9 performance nice boost, which has been maintained through to 4.7.....so i'm not losing out in any way in that aspect. It might seem stupid to most people, but until I get my X800Pro I'm staying with the 4.6's. The 4.7 release does include some said performance increases with my future X800 card, so I'll have to re-evaluate the driver situation when i get THAT card. for now though, that's just how things are looking. Not that most of you will care at all.....but i was bored, so lay off. :p

Edit: When I said I'd keep the 4.6 Cats installed.....I meant on my benchmarking partition, which i have setup comPLETELY different from my main partition, which allows me to tweak the hell out of things without effecting my "everyday setup" and saves the time of re-enabling everything on the main partition when I'm done playing. :) I'm putting the 4.7's on my main/gaming partition 'cus I still wanna play around with TAA a bit.

Where exactly do you have to go in the registry to change the default 60fps (for TAA) to something lower or higher?

I did it once, but can't seem to find it again.

Or is there an option in the control panel for setting those?
I'd download and check, but I'm on vacation, so I'm limited to a pII 233 laptop, lol, on dial up.

Does anyone else notice lag in TAA? I was playing HL (offline) and the mouse and walk movements felt laggy. I was getting 99FPS in Fraps and if I type "Timerefresh" I was hitting about 180FPS so it shouldn't have been slow. I was playing at 1600x1200 /w 6xAA 8xAF on Direct3D (Isn't it the best on ATI?)

Damn dude, why'd you block the hot chick? Who is that btw?
I have a R9800 Pro I'll be trying it on at home. Hope TAA is there.

On the new Cats:
X800 Pro @ XT speeds (525 / 575):
3dMark 03: 11433

This on an Athlon 64 3200+, Asus K8V SE Deluxe, 1GB RAM, WD 74GB Raptor.

I'm going to try the hardmod later, will report back with results.

Don't you recognize the bridge on her nose? It's big enough to land 747s on.

The 4.7's increased my FPS on UT2k4 and COD. Halo is great too. The new feature they put in was enabled automatically.

i used Driver Cleaner 3 and removed 4.6 then installed 4.7 and i kept freezing in Far Cry. . . Went back to 4.6 and everything is fine. I did have 4.7 betas for a little while and everything was fine and had better Scores with all 3dmarks. i'll probably go back to 4.7 betas.
