*** Official Catalyst 4.2 Thread ***

Ok, some litle issues here with 4.2's
I used to have the 3.9 ones, (had downloaded the 3.10 and 4.1 but didn't had time to change to them :\).
After installing the 4.2 runned a series of tests with card in stock speed, here is the result.
Max Paine 2, all fine.
UT2004 demo, GPF after some time, 40 min to one hour. (played it for hours with Oced card in 3.9)
Moto GP2, getting back to Desktop or Freezing after some time like UT2004, about one hour of game.
PES3 normal. no bugs corrected. but this is konamis fault :)
NBA live 2004, hanged in about 30 to 50 min of playing time.

Ok, i have to admit that freezing after some time of playing is really strange, it should not be related to drivers, but I have no heating issue, I have not overclocked the card for these tests. And everything went fine with 3.9. i'll get back to 3.9 for now, and i'll let you know everything.
BTW i use an 9500->9700 w1zzard softmod, maybe this is the problem but i doubt.

Other then the slight gain I received from the 3.9's in 3dmark I have one other reason for finally moving back to them.....the Doom3 Alpha. I do load it up from time to time because my system's at the point where even this (completely) un-optimized alpha runs VERY good and I do enjoy it every once and awhile.

The problem with the 4.2's (and EVERY release after 3.9) is that the shadows are displayed incorrectly and flash and things.....making it not nearly as enjoyable.

Seeing as I use the Alpha (running this smooth ;) ) to "show off" to people who haven't seen it, I want it to look how it should and the 3.9's are the most recent driver set that actually does what I need them to do.....in ALL aspects.

My experiences with the 4.2s (ATI 9500) are great. So far it's one of the better driver's sets to date IMO. The main game I play is Everquest and runs much better then the 3.10 or 4.1 driver sets. The painkiller demo is very awesome and UT2004 demo plays great as well.

Riiiiight.....I bet lots of people aren't gonna download them now, just 'cus you said that.

Not EVERY driver set is for everyone, some people need to learn that nothing is 100% failsafe and some hiccups are to be expected.

Oh man... Don't ever play the original UT in D3D mode with either Nvidia or ATi. Its just soooo wrong. If you can't run Glide (which UT really was designed to run on and not D3D) use OpenGL. Please remember UT original is not D3D or OpenGL natively coded, it was originally designed only to work on 3DFX cards.

You need to run OpenGL with Loki's OpenGL to S3TC wrapper and then install the extra high quality textures from the 2nd CD. Not only does it look infinitely better its faster on most videocards.

Its a little bit of extra work, but its worth it.. You should be able to find a guide on how to install the wrapper by doing a search. You will know you have installed the high quality textures correctly when you look at the Assault map with the moving train. The train will be yellow with blue stripes.

Man, I miss my Voodoo3 2000 PCI.....Glide was the shit. :D

Just reinstall it or buy a new hardware.

That makes no sense. So the drivers don't work.....so what. It happens, and a lot of people stay with older releases due to compatibility issues. Things like this aren't always a matter of a faulty install so don't assume this of our buddy tshen here. He may have gone slightly over the top with his little statement but so did you.

Now you're even. ;) :D

Well, it's back to the CAT's 3.9 for the meantime...I'm getting the weird gamma/brightness funkiness with Call of Duty.

This problem has been inherent since 3.9. When another app takes the foreground your 3D reverts to basic gamma/brightness and goes a lot darker.

vid_restart :)

Good advise, should save a lot of people some time. I guess I'm just lucky that I don't really play any of the games that people typically have troubles with.....or my XT just likes me. One or the other. ;) :p

When I first got my 9600 pro, I installed the 3.8's and everything has worked fine. I was getting lock ups at the menu screen on Nascar 2004 so I installed 4.2's. My desktop kept crashing to a blank black screen and my monitor would go into power saving mode right after the Windows splash screen on boot. I decided to go back and try 3.7's and everything is absolutley perfect now. I truly believe that everyone's system responds different to new drivers for some reason. As for me, I simply cannot use 3.9 and up for some reason. It makes my flat panel DVI monitor go into power saving mode right after start up. This same thing happened to my brother's computer and I have read it in many threads on here too.

Dammit, when will ATI fix the DVI issue!!!???
I am stuck on 3.7 as well!!

Heh, I've had a fair amount of 9600's and such installed in demo computers at work (Futureshop) on DVI lcd's and they've always been fine. ;)

Maybe I'm just struck with a stroke of good luck or something, 'cus I've NEVER had any problems with ATI at all.

I feel for you guys that are sifting through this and waiting patiently for fixes but I really have no time for guys that use stuff like this to bash ATI and call them shit.

Game on brothas.....there's nothing really wrong with those 3.7's anyways. :)

Hi all, just to tell you that the drivers are fine as far as I could see....
The problem was the overclocking app from wizzard :)

Interesting thread here. I'm about to startup a new system on Wednesday night and trying to figure out which drivers would be best for it. The new system is:

WinXP Home Edition
P4 3.2GHz CPU
Asus P4P800-Deluxe MB
1GB Corsair XMS TwinX1024 PC3200Pro RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro 256MB
Audigy2
Logitech Elite Keyboard
Logitech MX500 mouse

Here's a comment from another forum:
"As for as the best driver version for the 9800 pro, the 3.9's seem to have best all around for Image Quality and stability which are my main concerns. The 3.7's produced faster FPS and bench marks but the color rendering seemed a little washed out. The 4.2 had a stutter effect in more demanding games like pain killer demo and halo. I'm staying with the 3.9's - IQ is outstanding and FPS are decent in most games."

I was going to go with the 4.2s, but I'm not sure now.........maybe the 3.9s until some issues are ironed out.

I'll be installing UT, UT2003, Q3, Unreal2, UnrealXMP, UT2004 (once purchased), Postal2, Halo demo, and a few other DX9 demos that I don't want to run on my DX8 system in my specs. And, of course, Doom3 once it is released!

Any advice anyone can give me, let me know. Thanks and I'll post my experience with the 4.2s in the thread if I run them.

Personally, those are all the same reasons I'm sticking with the 3.9's.....the combination of the IQ and performance are superior to any other release as of late in my testing.....on MY system. There were a few things that got done along the way (since 3.7) that I really like, and there're a couple little things that bother me about the 4.2's.....mainly the fact that they bench slower and offer no bonus' to me in any way shape or form.

I'll put in my vote for the 3.9's on this one. :)

Well, considering you have an XT card and are still sticking with the 3.9s, it sounds like the 3.9s are the way to go for now!

Anyone have any experience with any of the drivers and the games I mentioned above?
