*Official* AVCHD Camcorder's Thread

i know next to nothing about camcorders, so here's a question to you [H] camcorder gurus:

a brother in law is looking for an HDD camcorder, and so far we got to conclusion that Canon Vixia HG21 is his best bet. based on above posters, it seems like it's not a bad choice. he's willing to spend up to $1000, so if there's anything else that's worth taking a look at, please let me know.

the camcorder will be used primarily for his personal home use, but he also wants to do some of the blue screen editing for websites. with that in mind, what software package do you recommend for something like that? video is a new field for both of us, and we're not quite sure where to look. i'd appreciate all your help.

I did some research before buying and the Canon HG21 came out on top. This is specially true if you are not into 5.1 for you camcorder. Even if you are the image quality would still make up for it.

Those are the opinions of someone knowledgable that owned many of the current crop of HDD HD Cams.

Here is a good thread to read named "Canon HF11 vs. Canon HG21 vs. Sony HDR-SR12".

If you have any questions on the HG21 feel free to post here and I will try to answer.

Good luck.

thanks for the advice guys, but i talked to my brother in law tonight, and looks like he decided to go with a Sony "something, something" (might be the HDR SR-12, but i don't know.) whatever, he's the one that will end up using it :D

Pretty sure that was with a $1000 35mm lense adapter... but could be wrong... The annoying thing about the HV20 is you get... 24p... or 60i... and you gotta get an HV30 for the 30p...

I'm planning to grab an HV30 and throw on fisheye lense and let other kids run around and film stuff for me when I'm on a tripod.

I'm not a fan of AVCHD... HDV is compressed enough... but this thread is about AVCHD so I'll leave it alone heh... :D

i had a sony BT-pc120 mdv camcorder that just died a couple of days ago, just right before by baby blows fer first Birthday cake my camcorder just died!!!! ... i've had that this for 6 years now, i even took it to afghanistan with me when i deployed, it has done its part and now its time to move on...

i am purchasing a camcorder this weekend and based on all the reviews on the net, i am looking at the sony hdr-sr12 and the canon hg21. both have thier highs and lows, so i'm asking here if anybody has experience with any of the cams. i am confused with the 24p on canon, what does that mean? how about the sony what does it have? i looked at the spec on cnet and they are almost identical except for the LUX, the sony has 5lux and the canon has .2lux, can somebody explain?

here is what im looking for

good HD quality, capture all my baby's first
good sound
portability and sturdiness

i was at first leaning towards sony but now its 60/40, sony/canon

can somebody help me solidify my decision

thanks,

rize_runner

Go with the Canon. yes I am biased ;)

I read this review from someone that is "respected" in that forum and had both the cams you are, and I was, looking at.

Good luck

I need to dig a hole in the backyard for my DC50. :(
No vista support. It jumped off the cliff of obsolescence some time ago.
