Official ATI Catalyst 5.5 Drivers

funny how some of you people can get so excited over a new driver release that gives you a 200, 300 or even 400 point increase in synthetic benchmarks but (usually) doesnt do jacksh*t for you in real world gaming...

oh well, who cares if a game doesnt run better with a new driver release just as long as your 3DMarks go up. :p

A little anger there. Like the post above me said, some enjoy benchmarking more than gaming, to them those points are very important. Gaming is not the only reason some people by high end hardware....

heh, not hardly... why would I be angry?

For petey's sake calm down already Ozzie! You're getting entirely too worked up and I think you're blowing this all out of proportion!! ;)

okay, I was calm but now I'm not.

WTF are you talking about?

all I did was reply to someone that accused me of being angry when I wasnt. (hence the laughing smilely in my original post.)

and now I have you telling me that I'm blowing this out of proportion.

Christ's sakes..... and now you're telling me to calm down?

now i'm going to chime in and say calm down :D

i think the post above was joking, not so sure about the first one....ahh well, it's just a forum, no need for anger, and i'm not just talking about you oz :p

Seriously Ozz-man I was joking, that's why I put that winky on the end. :D :D

I went from the 4.12's to the 5.5 and now when I play Dawn of War I get an occasional jerky studder. I used DrivercleanerPro as well.

The only thing I don't have is Windows SP2 installed since it is a gaming rig. I've read the warnings log and dxdiag log and there are no problems.

Is SP2 recommended?

I've got it on, havn't seen any degradation in performace or stability.

They are supposed to be out June 6 or June 7. I heard that there will be major improvements.

Great. I just got finished installing the 5.5's and their going to roll out another!?!?

PS: For some bizarre reason with the 5.5 cats I had a lot of jerky motions while playing Dawn of War with only Windows Service Pack 1 installed. I upgraded to SP2 and have had no problems since. Weird........

Anyone else have this problem while playing Doom 3 (1.3 patch) with the 5.5 drivers. My screen flickers yellow likesome ones turning the yellow up and down on my TFT. I have a 17" Proview EM-170 and it only started happening after I installed the 5.5's......and possibly the 1.3 patch

any comments?.........

yeah, i'm not going to try the new drivers, i don't have a need to. the only reason why i went with the 5.5's was for the "fix" for the dantooine level in swkotor....and it wasn't fixed AGAIN....but i found a work-around and i've had no problems playing 1024x768 4x6 with all other settings on high...

Recently I reformaetd my computer and reinstalled Windows XP Pro.
I installed SP2 and all the other drivers (Cat CCC 5.5) and then installed SW Jedi Academy. For some reason this game just load into a level without crashing. In the begining it worked fine, then it crashed due to a supposed Driver error and now its some Lucas Arts problem. The errors changed even if I did nothing to even try to change them.
It is the same story with Battle Field 1942. I can load the game up but once I try to load into a level the game blacks out and closes. With BF though it makes that error message sound but either it closes too fast or it was never their for me to see.

How do you know? Over the last few months they've been coming out around the middle of the month.

Hey yo,

The Catalyst 5.6 is really out now @ www.ati.com with a lot of improvements as stated in their log:
* Doom3: A performance gain of up to 7% is noticed at lower resolutions as a result of more efficient memory use
* Chronicles of Riddick: A performance gain of up to 10% is noticed as a result of more efficient storage of vertex data
* Halo: A performance gain of up to 20% is noticed as a result of generic driver Z-optimizations
* 3DMark05: A performance gain of up to 5% is noticed as a result of generic driver Z-optimizations
