I have been trying to work through a problem at work recently, our network has a file server running NT4, which is hosting a bunch of shares for the company, now one user has loaded an excel spreadsheet (word 2000) and they've obviously crashed or had problems at some stage.
However I can no longer open the file because its locked by the user who used it last, theres no temp files in the same folder or in any of the temp folders (nor are they hidden), all our users are on 2k or XP.
I suspect that its some kind of conflict between NT4 and 2k/XP in the way that office holds the permissions for the file. Whoever used it last has permissions so when you're logged into the server and you "take permissions" (an NT feature) it lists the user who has it locked and then sets it to the server login. All this to no avail.
