If you were a fan of past Office generations and would like to make your copy of 2007 look a little more old school, then check out these handy UI programs that can help you get back to basics.

Sensing an opportunity, third-party software vendors have stepped in with products that either replace or enhance the new Ribbon interface in several Office 2007 applications. We examined three such programs.

Sounds like a good idea. I dread switching over users to Office 2007, and will delay it as long as I can. The migration from Office 2000 to XP to 2003 hasn't been a big deal, as the UI is relatively familiar. The complete change will throw our users for a complete loop, providing us with a solid six months of headaches or more, probably more because we'd likely do a staggered rollout.

I'd guess Office 2007 is a nice setup for someone who has never used Office before. However, I've installed it twice, and each time I've gone back to `03. I've installed the Compatibility Pack to make sure I can work with `07 documents, and that's where I'll stay for now.

I've used the basic office setup ever since word perfect in dos for my entire life, i'm sick of it.

The new 2007 UI is what I've been dreaming of, it makes everything so much easier and complete sense. I wish someone had made this easier before. File/edit/view/can/go/to/hell.

And I could see where it could be for some people. The way I look at it is, even if the new interface is great and the old ones (i.e., 95/97/2000/XP/2003) were broken, so many people were then taught to use a broken interface for so long that by the time a redesigned fixed one comes along, it becomes extremely difficult to untrain people, and that includes myself.

Office 2007 reminds me (very faintly) of the interface in late versions of AppleWorks, actually, though far more featured and complicated by comparison (complication being due to those additional features). I'm not sure it's a good or a bad thing yet --I just know the headaches that will be involved in helping people unlearn everything they ever knew about the previous UI's in order to learn the new one.
