OEM vs Retail quality?

Why is it that retail drives have a shorter warranty time then OEM drives? Does it have to do with quality?

No, same drives, sold at a lower price to OEMs, who are assumed to provide a warranty beyond what the actual manufacturer does. This works good for OEMs since they can get a lower unit cost and then turn around and charge their customers for an extended warranty, if they want one.
 
The only time I hear people talk about a difference between OEM and Retail is with CPUs...
