Hey all. I'm looking to upgrade my current Intel 478 2.66 GHz with a 3.0+ Prescott. I was looking and the only thing that i can find cheap are OEM CPUs. Is it a bad idea to get an OEM CPU or am I worrying for nothing?

Also, I have an Intel 875 mobo. Could I possibly put in a Yonah-based chip?

On a CPU that old don't worry about OEM or not... more than likely the warranty is out anyway, maybe not though. The ONLY difference between OEM and Non is the warranty, well... and you get a HSF with the Boxed verison if you are buying new. Don't stress.

As for the Yonah... nope, won't work sorry. First off the mobile CPUs are s479, but beyond that they are not compatible with that chipset. You may be able to use a Dothan, depending on the board you have. IIRC Asus makes an adapter for their 875 boards.

there are 478 processors, but it wont work with that chipset. they'd require 945 instead
 
Thanks all for the replys. I went ahead and got the 3.0 for $117. I'm really excited as it'll take my FSB from 533 to 800, double my L2 cache, and add HT, so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow.
