I need suggestions on a HS/F.

My case will be in the room right below where my monitor/kb/mouse are, allowing me to use a solution with a bit more noise. The room where the case will be is a basement, and isn't heated much in the winter, having a ambient temp of about 50F. It does get pretty hot here in the summer though.

Specs: Asus AV8. FX-55. Stock speed, will not be OC'ing. Front case fans pulling air in, rear ones pulling air out.

My initial thoughts were to go with a Thermaltake Volcano 11+ or 12, as I can ajust the fan speed for optimal noise/cooling on a seasonal basis. After reading the posts here, there seems to be some hatred for the Thermaltake products, but I don't know why exactly. Many folks seem to like Thermalright HS with a Panaflo fan. What do you think is a good solution for me?

Thermalright HS with a Panaflo fan? If so which ones? The XP-90 with one of these 80mm Panaflos fans, L,M,H,U? The L and U doesnt have RPM monitoring from what I've seen. Also, I don't even see the XP-90/120s on the Thermalright website here: http://www.thermalright.com/product_default.htm

What is it about Thermaltake products (Volcanos) that everyone hates? Are they poor performers, too expensive, the loud noise, or a combination of these 3 or more?
 
I assume you mean the Tornado. Let's just say it earns it's name. I've heard it sounds like a jet engine.
 
Yes, the Tornado products. I know they are loud, but do they cool well? The noise may not be as much of a factor for me as my case will be in the room below my work area, and with the adjustable speeds I should be able to tune it for cooling vs noise.
 
I bought a 80mm tornado and it was in my computer all of 5 minutes before I ripped it out.

:eek: Loud is an understatement. All these posts that liken the noise to a hairdryer... believe them.

Also, quite possibly the only fan I have ever owned where you actually SHOULD have a fan guard on it.
 
The stock FX55 cooler is awesome. Equivalent to an XP90 or thereabouts. Just stick with it and enable cool and quiet. No need for another cooler, unless of course you're getting an OEM FX55.

I mostly agree with this. The stock cooler is great, the only reason I would get an aftermerket cooler is if you are going to do some serious O/C. Then I think the only choice is xp-90 or xp-120.

I would stay away from the tornado. That noise make me insane when I hear it.
 
An FX-55 and not overclocking ? Whats the point in getting that over the 4000+ if your not gonna OC ? And if your not gonna OC youll definetly do fine with the stock cooler, just turn on your motherboards automatic fan speed controls
 
The stock cooler isn't doing a good job for me at all, as my load temps hit 69C fast.

Maybe it needs to be reseeded, but I'm positive the air flow in the case is good as I've used the same setup with other MB/CPUs without heat problems. Lots of front fans pulling air in, lots of rear ones pulling air out.
 
Definitely reseat the HSF. The stock cooler should be keeping your chip under 50 deg C while under load.

I didnt believe them either. I had the fan on for 30 seconds. I couldnt stand it. It did blow damn hard though. I'll put it in a system that's in the garage some day.
 
I guess I am the only one using TT product on AMD 64 :confused:

Winchester 3200 OC to 2.7 GHz, 1:1 1T, 1.5 Vcore, on MSI Neo2.

Silent Boost K8 with SmartFan 2.

Idle34, Game 45, Prime 49c.

Installation is straight drop and lock.
 
If I had the budget, i'd look into an adjustable fan with a good heatsink. I have a Volcano 7 and 2 Volcano 9's and have been extremely satisfied. Now I can't even imagine having an HSFFAN that I could not adjust...plus it is useful for driving people away! I just got the second volcano 9 for about 9 bucks....which is less than the cost of the fan on top of it! I will not spend ~50 bucks on air cooling so it is the best solution for me (yes I do OC)

I was at the computer show to get the Neo 2 and A64 3200 Winny ($179 :p )combo, remember Anand site OC the 3200 to 2.6 GHz with the Thermaltake Silent Boost K8, so I picked up one too, thinking that I could upgrade to XP120 later. My case already has the adjustable knob installed in front for the 80mm TT Smart fan 2, and I use that instead of silent fan came with the K8. Installation is even easier than the stock AMD heatsink.

With the fan running 3300 RPM, it could keeps the max load temp under 50C, I can't complain. And the above combo can OC to 2.7 GHz, me a happy camper.
 
z0dd, you asked a question about Thermaltake products and people started answering in refereance to Tornado fans. If I read correctly there was a bit of miscommunication.

Tornado fans have nothing to do with Thermaltake. They are made to be hardcore air pushers, and thus are also hardcore noise makers. (I use one on a fan speed controller)

Although it does seem some people here don't like Thermaltake, don't take the comments you heard about Tornados and apply them to Thermaltake products in general.

I use a Thermaltake power supply and its been great since I got it. I also use their Volcano 7 (different fan) and Volcano 9. I personally think they are a good company. I agree with Spetsnaz in that I can't imagine not having a control for my most important, and usually loudest, fan.

Its my opinion that Thermaltake takes abuse around here because they sometimes market cheasy "modder's gear" type products. Of course, what is a "mod" that comes retail packaged? Its the difference between buying a ThermalRight HS and getting just that: a HS (the rest is up to you) and buying ThermalTake which usually means you're also getting a pretty box (although I've never seen a ThermalRight box so I don't know) with all sorts of cheasy marketing hype on it, possibly LED add-ons, and all the extras. Take a look at the this to see what I mean http://www.thermaltake.com/accessories/a1875xpeaker/a1875xpeaker.htm . I mean come on.... thats just silly.

However, they do have some quality products. And it is definitely a bonus that with each HSF combo you get a variable speed fan with manual/thermal controlled options.

I've narrowed my HS decision down to either a Thermalright XP-90 or a Swiftech MCX6400-V. I'm unable to find a place that has the Thermalright XP-90 in stock, so I may just go with the Swiftech MCX6400-V.

Any preferences for either of these? I found this review pitting them against each other:

Does anyone know if these fit nicely onto a Asus A8V Motherboard with a AMD FX CPU?

How do fans (80-92mm) mount onto the XP-90? It doesn't look like it has fan mounts like the MCX6400-V does.

They claim in stock. I've ordered from Jab-tech a couple times and have had positive experiences. They generally have good prices.

And I think the fans screw right into the heatsink... thats why the heatsink is stepped at the top. Interior for 80mm and exterior for 92mm? This is all just a guess - not from first hand knowledge.

Thanks for the info. I found some pics on google images of other Thermalright HSs that have a retention clip mechanism that holds the HS in place, such as:
