This is all just for my amusement and curiosities sake really but I' recently built a zfs pool out of 8 1TB WD Red drives and I was looking into L2ARC ssd but i got side tracked playing with my sas raid array and started wondering just what would using 15k sas drives as an L2ARC actually do? Would it actually do anything or just waste power?

You'd have better access times for cached data (but not orders of magnitude like with an SSD). Sequential read rates will be lower than from the main pool though, as you'll have fewer drives aggregating bandwidth.

Huh interesting is it possible to use a hardware raid array as L2ARC? I've got my sas raid array in the same system usually it's just idle or offline
