Hi Guys,

I'm battling my ISP regarding broadband speed issues and I've been doing a boat load of testing, I also have a new laptop, which doesn't help as its an unknown factor. This is not the reason for this post but to give a little detail, when I use speedtest.net it threads at 32 connections and I get 220Mbps but normal http downloads are about 5MBps.

I have a 'Killer wireless 1535' connecting to a Unifi-AP-AC-Pro or my Virgin Media's Wireless when in routing mode both at AC.

The odd issue:
My Internet speed over wireless is shockingly slow, but respectful to the local network.

When I download from the local network, I get around 30MBps, up is around 13MBps. When I download from the Internet, I get a shocking 1 to 2MBps, when I do a speedtest.net I get around 60Mbps (note the change in Bytes to Bits). If I change to wired or use another computer on speedtest.net I get 220Mbps.

Any thoughts?
 
So this is the same using two different APs? (the Unifi and the ISP-provided?)

Have you updated the wifi drivers? How's the speed on any other wifi devices in the house?
 
Yep, its the same on either AP. Wireless drivers are up-to-date.

I don't have anything else AC, but am going to test with a Mac tomorrow, as I don't have that right now.
 
That 1-2MBps equates to 8-16Mbps or a 1/4 to 1/2 of wired local download.
How many other WiFi devices are in the area? Each competes for air time. A couple of cell phones, tablets, 'smart' TVs or blueray players and your wireless channels slow down. Nearby neighbor's crap also counts.
What do the WiFi properties show you connecting at? A lot of the newer stuff rapidly degrades speed as the distance between radios increases.
Odd thought, are your wired packets and wireless packets the same size? Could be forcing the router to fragment jumbo packets sent via WiFi.
 
Wire directly into the ISP modem. If it is a dumb modem just go right into a laptop. See what you get by bypassing any routers.Getting 30 down when you are paying for 220 is not acceptable.

Is it cable? You can likely replace their modem or modem/router with your own modem. If you are just swapping out the router the issue may be with the modem. Also use different Ethernet cables as a test just in case you have a bad one.
 
My wireless interference isn't bad. I was thinking of MTU however, my devices are 1500, but I am going to investigate this.

MrTroy03 - I'm not sure if I have explained myself well enough. When connected via wireless to my local network speeds are about 240 Mbps download, however to the internet is 60Mbps. Any other devices that are wired get 220Mbps to the Internet. The local speed of 240Mbps shows the wireless is performing ok. What doesn't make sense is why the internet speed reduces when the local network shows higher speeds. I don't think it's the router/firewall (pfsense) as the wired speeds are consistent between that and my modems router.
