Odd video issue

Hey guys,

Have an issue with my notebook that i've been trying to solve for quite some time. needless to say this has me quite baffled.

First off about 6 months ago i started to notice video playback was getting choppy at times, not to mention video games were lagging more than normal. I've tried every driver from ATI/AMD their is, nothing seems to help. Recently I lowered my screen resolution to 1280x720, law and behold video playback got better. but video games even at lower res still are quite laggy. I thought maybe the issue was my video card so I went on ebay and got a brand new AMD MXM 5870M asus card to replace what I thought was a bad video card. Sure enough, I wasted 300.00..

SO after throwing 300.00 out the stinking window,I thought perhaps its time to call in the big guns and hit the forums.
TO be honest when I set the res to 1600x900 and play games it looks like the pixels are flashing on the screen, but at the same time I get a lot of start stop like a pause while I play games and I get the same thing while watching movies as well. lower the res, seems to be better. Tried plugging in a monitor to my notebook and watch movies and play games that way. same problem.

As I said I've tried every driver that was released for the ATI/AMD Mobility 5870.. I"ve formatted reinstalled windows etc. no dice.
I noticed today when I opened HWinfo32 the Intel PCH temp is no longer showing. Could I be looking at a motherboard issue here?

Whats your opinion?

Its a laptop and you've already replaced the video card so yes the problem is probably in the motherboard somewhere.

Have you done a BIOS reset? Have you flashed the latest BIOS? On the fresh Windows install do you have ALL appropriate drivers? Are other temps (CPU/GPU) OK?

Answer all these and we will go from there.

yep, hit the reset button in the bios,
temps are normal. GPU idle 48c full load 76c
CPU idle 45 full load 74
bios is current vbios is as well...

Just did a fresh install of windows today, took it back to factory defaults.

she's as clean as I can get her. still can't game any higher than 720p or watch movies with my rest higher than 720p

Sounds like something you aren't going to be able to fix is fried.

Probably time to sell the 2 graphics cards and buy a new laptop.

your probably right but I hope your wrong. I posted the card I got on ebay in hopes that I can get some money back so I can get a motherboard for this thing. I can't think of anything else it would be. HD's pass, memory passes. only thing I can think of is because the intel PCH temp is not reporting when I open HWinfo32 that maybe the chipset is bad. the Intel PCH is responsible for video, networking and I/O and if I'm not mistaken it works with the SATA controller as well.

Have to give it one more shot.. I dont have 1300.00+ for another gaming rig right now.
