Hey guys,

My housemate has got a problem with her speakers - there's a weird crackling coming from them whenever they're switched on - i've tried disabling hardware acceleration in dxdiag but to be honest i can't even think of anything else to try - all the cables are fine etc... any ideas?

TIA

Trying different speakers would at least help you pinpoint where the trouble is.

EMI could cause strange sounds in your speakers.
Do you have a fluorescent light right next to a speaker?

Go into the sound properties on her PC and mute all inputs that she never uses (line in, mic, etc).

Update/re-install the sound driver.

My wife had a similar problem when she upgraded an older pc from ME to XP. The POS HP modem/sound combo card didn't work right in XP and had to be replaced. An el cheapo Sound Blaster 16 fixed it right up.
