Ok well im throwing together some parts ive got and im selling it to a friend. I got it all setup and running great, just one problem :

While shutting down windows xp, once it gets to Shutting down windows... or whatever it says just before it shuts down, it freezes and does not do anything leaving you to have to manually shut it down. This also happens when i reboot. The time ive had this issue is when ive had bad ram and this ram is great and always has been. Heres specs :

FNW Case
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
ASUS A7N266-C
ASUS ACR Card Onboard Audio
ASUS USB Expansion
2x 256MB Crucial PC2100 (512MB)
300W HEC PSU
GF4 Ti4600 128MB
16x Tosiba DVD-ROM
16x PlexWritier CD-RW
Green Cathode Light
Windows XP Home
Norton AntiVirus
PowerDVD
MS Office 2000 Professional
Linksys Ethernet 10/100
Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM Hard Drive

Just a thought, did you try running memtest86? If you've had a similar problem with bad ram before it's always possible that the ram you're using is bad in some way. I'd try memtest86 and let it run for a while just to make sure.

Also, when you put this system together did you make sure you had updated drivers for everything? What are the temps? I kind of doubt it would be a temp issue but you never know.

I'm wondering if you have a bad Windows install. Also, did you do all the Windows updates and newest drivers? There could also be a conflict with some software you have installed.

I won't rule out a hardware problem, so I would run memtest86 and prime 95 to see if you get any errors. But what you are describing sounds like a software problem.

Did you check the event viewer to see if there were any entries that could point you at the culprit?
