Odd SATA Issue

I have the Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000G motherboard. I have 4 devices installed to IDE, and I had one HDD installed to SATA 0. It's been installed for about 6-9 months.

About two weeks ago, it stopped showing up under My Computer, but it still was showing up during bootup (the device listing while the PC boots up). Then about a week ago I started having some serious PC problems (I have another thread floating around here somewhere) and one of the problems I was having was that the PC was taking 10-15 minutes to load.

I replaced the primary C drive with another IDE drive I have laying around and reformated and reinstalled WinXP Pro. Still no SATA drive, and the PC was still somewhat slow to bootup (5 minutes or so). I powered down, unplugged the SATA drive, and now the PC runs perfectly. VERYquick bootup.

So -What's the deal? Bad drive? SATA is bad on the mobo? Driver issue? (I have all the mobo drivers installed)..

Any insight?
 
if the manufacturer's drive tools can see it, maybe it can tell you if it's dying/dead
 
I'm about to run SeaTools right now.. Hopefully this will shed some light!
 
Well, SeaTools says that the drive is OK and reads it fine.

So why the eff doesn't it work in windows?
 
you could also try a linux live cd to see if you can get into the drive. you can also use Windows Ultimate Boot CD to try and see if you can see the drive that way....i'll let you know if i can think of anything else
