Ok so i helped my friend build a computer awhile ago, he got it done and then he had some problems(his ram was defective) so then he went out bought new ram problem went away, he rma'd his 2 sticks to mushkin and now hes back to where he started with his axp-m 2600+, dfi LPB, mushkin 2-2-2 special 2x512 Chenming/Cheiftec 25" cases with a Antec 480 truepower and a Sapphire 9800xt and a WD 250gig SATA drive.
He went out and bought a WD 160gig IDE drive and tried to format it, this is where the problems started. He got it working, got in XP and was updating. Then he rebooted and got a "Check signal" Error, He used to get this problem alot and fixed it somehow, something about "fixng the fan" cuz the grill on the fan was touching it and it just wouldnt boot.
So today he got this and tried the same thing. When he rebooted he got a "Checksum Error" and now he cant turn his computer on at all. His motherboard is getting power, (the red led's are on). He checked the connection from the motherboard to the power switch, its still connected, his tried taking out the memory/hdd's and still nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
I would take everything back out, reinstall, make sure no pins are crossed on any of the hardware.

Also, was the 160gb hd OEM, or retail?
