Odd problem with drives

Since I do not know the specific hardware that is causing the problem, I thought I would post here. For the last few days, at random times my computer would undergo heavy harddrive activity, and then start locking up, then freeze completely. It started happening more and more often, and then Windows started to refuse to boot. I thought I would reinstall Windows, but turns out magically all of a sudden my drive can only read DVDs and not CDs... So, I was forced to install Suse 9.2, under which I still received the same problem, thus this is not OS dependant. Also, I borrowed an 8.4 GB Maxtor drive to try installing Suse on, and that drive has the same problem, though a tad less (then again I haven't experimented heavily with it). I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what this could be... IDE Channels screwing up? I know it's not the cables, cause I replaced them... This is the first time I've ever been completely stumped.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Check the drives in another machine, flash the BIOS, clear CMOS, and try booting Knoppix to test for erros. But, my money's on the IDE controller if you can read DVD's and not CD's. That just seems too anomalous.
